What about Athlete’s Foot?
Athlete’s foot is a skin infection caused by a fungus, not a virus or bacteria. The medical terms for
this condition are; tinea pedis, tinea pedum, and moccasin foot. You probably already know this,
but Athletes are not the only folk who can suffer from this infection – almost everyone can pick it up.
The most common ways of getting infected are if you:
•
•
•
•
walk around barefoot in shared public shower areas, or other public damp or wet places
not change your socks and shoes regularly, so that they are constantly damp
use towels that have been used by an infected person
use foot wear that does not “breathe”, for example, nylon socks, or shoes made from
synthetics
What does Athlete’s foot look like?
Early infections are normally found between the two smallest toes of you foot, where it looks like a
small, wet crack, surrounded by some white, dead, skin, and it might sting a little. Other signs are:
•
•
cracked and itchy skin under your feet especially around all your toes
the skin might be hard and scaly, it is also sometimes red, inflamed, and very itchy
If you ignore the symptoms, the fungus will spread to the rest of your foot making it sore and itchy.
You can also infect other people. Another complication is that you are more likely to develop a Nail
Fungus. Some of the signs that you may have a Nail Fungus are:
•
Yellow or brown spots or streaks on the nail
•
White, opaque and brittle nails
•
The nail is thicker than it usually is, or thicker than other nails on the same foot or hand
•
The nail may also crumble because it is soft, and sometimes it may even fall completely off
So how can I treat Athlete’s Foot?
In most cases, the condition can be easily treated at home. The first thing to do is to make sure that
you keep your feet and footwear dry:
•
•
•
•
change socks and shoes regularly, and allow shoes to air
avoid synthetic foot ware
dry your feet thoroughly after a bath or shower
use a good foot powder (some also have anti-fungal properties)
These steps will help, and in fact are really important. But they are not sufficient, you should also:
•
•
•
Treat with an anti fungal cream
You could also disinfect your feet and socks by soaking them in a WEAK bleach solution,
about 10 minutes is enough
rub Tea Tree oil into the infected area
Will this be enough if I also have a Nail Fungus?
Not really, it will help, but Nail Funguses are more difficult to clear, because nails are thick. So you
have to treat the nail directly. Yoffee Clear is the ideal home treatment medication for nail fungus.
This is because it is easy to use, and based on safe organic ingredients that are commonly used as
medications. It is also relatively fast acting, and readily available at most pharmacies and online.
And although it is not intended as an Athlete’s Foot remedy, it is effective here too.
