Postgraduate, website / magazine writer, ESL Teacher
In 2020 I pursued a qualification in Communications at Honours level with Massey University. This full-time study was conducted entirely online and was completed upon submission of my thesis in November. The 20,000 word thesis was an analysis into the impact of digital technologies on cultural formation and sense-making. Speaking to my passion and persistent fascination with the realm of digital media and communication, the qualification was immensely inspiring. I maintained an A grade GPA across courses.
My online magazine, Discipline Mag (http://www.disciplinemag.com), created in late 2019, has a focus on underground music. It features reviews, interviews, news, and film. Earlier this year I produced a feature length documentary filmed in Yogyakarta, Indonesia about an annual avant-garde music event held in the city every January (edited with Premiere Pro). The pieces I create for Discipline Mag require a variety of skills including research, interview techniques, clear written communication, photography, editing, and networking. This project has improved my online proficiencies as I continue to navigate SEO, YouTube, and the power of social media.
I have worked as an ESL teacher since 2015, a job I began while living in Hong Kong. Teaching English is a position that I took to naturally. This is because years spent living abroad have diversified my social groups and bolstered my ability to communicate with people of varying backgrounds. In 2020 teaching has moved entirely online, resulting in the heavy use of the Google and Microsoft Suite.
