PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE March 1988 – 31 Dec 2016 Allan Gray I have just over 28 years experience in a financial services environment. I spent my first two years at Allan Gray as a business user – as a performance analyst and then as manager of performance and investment accountant. From day 1 already I was involved in IT as a key report was not reflecting a particular investment correctly – thus I found myself getting into the code (Clipper) and making the changes myself. This kept on happening until I found myself working in IT as a developer in 1990 1988 – Performance analyst 1989 - Manager of Performance and Investment Accounting. Pioneered the first Performance Audit with Ernst and Young. 1990 – Clipper Developer. Optimising performance reports by redesigning the underlying engine to function as a building block – in a high data volume environment (associated with that of an asset manager). 1991 – Operations Support Manager – responsible for a high turnaround in resolution of BI issues – the IT team rotated and I was responsible for ensuring the bulk of BI issues was resolved. I was extremely successful as there was no need for this position to continue into 1992 as the bulk of the problems was fixed. 1992 – 2000- I was tasked with maintaining or creating reports to support BI demands – examples of such reports were those associated with the BI unit known as the Client Accounting and Performance System. New reports were required to satisfy external demands such as the Carson’s Statement M (grouping assets into JSE sectoral categories and supergroups (Financials, Industrials, Resources) and Taxable Interest which applies to all interest bearing financial instruments – money market instruments, deposits, NCDs, bonds). Another aspect of my job was managing the performance of reports to run faster with better indices on the various databases. A key one here was the Transactions database – which I needed to split every few years or so – establishing a cut-off date which ensured that most of the reports (run for recent periods) only accessed the smaller Transactions database thus ran more quickly- – Development for the Allan Gray Life System, UT Pricing, Multi-Currency (Botswanan clients). 2007 – Training an IT engineer to do my job, programming in SQL and writing reports in Crystal 2008 – 2016 – SQL, SSRS, Test Analysis (automation of testing via SQL). Motivation My IT knowledge is all software related – also “ancient” – 1982 – Comp. Sc 1a – Pascal with Professor Linck, punching cards…, then in 1983, Comp. Sc II – we were using PCs - more Pascal and Cobol and some theory which I memorised and a holiday job at Burroughs as I had a scholarship, but I did not continue to Comp. Sc III as the project was to code a Compiler which scared me off. Ironically, after Stats Hons and Maths Hons, I landed up as a software developer at Allan Gray for 28 years– Clipper, and SQL, also software testing in 2016. We had network people around us so I never had to fix a printer or know anything about hardware. Then, in 2017, when I was medically boarded (after two craniotomies to debulk an oligodendroglioma(type of brain tumour) in 2004 and 2009), I had to consider reinventing myself - I successfully completed GetSmarter courses in copyediting, copywriting, and web design, while tutoring maths in between. I want to get back into tutoring maths combined with tutoring technology, thus need to have a good knowledge of the many aspects of networks, the internet, multi-media. The MIT would satisfy this requirement as well as preparing me (and enhancing my CV) for possible freelance work.
