Sinusitis or sinus infection is the inflammation of the paranasal sinuses or cavities that produce the mucus for the normal function of our nasal passages. This may often be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or allergies.
Here are the most common symptoms of sinusitis:
-Postnasal drip
-Greenish nasal discharge
-Nasal congestion
-Facial pain and pressure particularly under the eyes or at the bridge of the nose
-Coughing
-Fatigue
-Halitosis or bad breath
This condition can be painful and uncomfortable and often mistaken for cold. It does not normally need medical intervention and goes away at some point. Only after 7 to 10 days of persistent symptoms that a medication is needed but if it won’t respond to maximum medical treatment after 3 months, a sinus surgery may be needed as the last resort.
The surgery is done by ENT specialist or otolaryngologist. Here are the top reasons why a sinus surgery may be needed:
-Persistent chronic sinusitis even after maximum aggressive medication
-Sinus inflammation due to fungal infection
-Nasal polyps
-Structural abnormalities of the nose or sinuses
-Sinus infection that has spread to bone
-Cancer of the sinus
If you are suffering from any of the conditions listed above, there are few types of sinus surgery you can choose from.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery(FESS). Simply termed as endoscopy. Doctors use endoscopes which are thin and flexible instrument that are then inserted into the nose. One of the instrument has a small camera lens that captures a live scan to see where your sinuses are blocked and then guides the other instruments to gently remove polyps. Since this is mildly invasive, recovery is often faster and easier.
Balloon Sinuplasty. This is a newer technology that can be used when doctors do not need to remove anything from your sinuses. It uses a thin tube that is also inserted into the nose. At one end of the tube will be a small balloon that the doctor will then glide to the blocked area inside the nose and inflates it. It would help clear the passageway and avoid congestion.
Open sinus surgery. This is normally done in complicated cases where the sinus is opened directly so that the dead tissues can be removed, and the sinus reconstructed.
