Dizziness or balance disorder is the feeling of being unsteady or off-balance whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down. It is characterized by feeling as though you are spinning or about to fall down. Everyone may experience it now and then but frequent episodes of dizziness should turn the alarm bells in one’s head as it is the body’s way to tell that there might be an underlying medical condition that triggers it.
Our sensory information about motion, equilibrium, and spatial orientation is provided by the vestibular apparatus that lives in each of our ears. Normal functioning vestibular apparatus send symmetrical impulses to the brain and when they do not, this causes dizziness and balance disorders.
Many fail to listen to what their body is silently telling them and often takes their balance for granted. More so, they shrug off any dizziness episodes thinking it isn’t a big deal until it is too late.
Here are the most common symptoms of balance disorder that can occur whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down:
-Feeling as if the room is spinning around you even for a few seconds
-Feeling like you are moving even if you are standing or sitting still
-Feeling as if you are going to fall
-Fainting sensation
-Staggering when you try to walk
-Lightheadedness or floating sensation
-Blurred vision, confusion, or disorientation
-Nausea or vomiting
Balance disorder and frequent dizziness reduces one’s activity of daily living and may cause depression.
As one of the famous lines say, there’s a danger in falling. For people who suffers with balance disorder, this is quite literal as falls may cause traumatic brain injury and bone fracture. In fact, statistics from the American Institute of Balance shows that falls are the leading cause of accidental deaths in persons over 65.
