Sincerely, Cheandrie Michelle Myburgh CORPORATE IDENTITY KENNEDY FLEISCHER HOMES KUDU OUTDOOR PRODUCTS When designing a logo it is important to keep in mind the needs of the client whilst working towards an end product that is versatile in all it’s applications. When considering the various applications of a company logo, such as promotional and clothing branding, embroidery is usually tricky if a logo design is too complicated or not designed with embroidery specifications in mind. The primary necessities expressed in this design brief read as follows: “I am a realtor that represents sellers, buyers and investors. I am a community market leader. I help people turn their dreams into reality and build wealth through real estate!” The following points to communicate through this logo design was specifically requested as Integrity, Sexy, and polished. After identifying the target audience I opted for the visualization of a lion’s head door knocker and a serifed font in order to create a logo which was strong yet elegant. Keeping embroidery and print specifications in mind when designing a logo is important as this may lead to your client being able to save on print expenses and save them the trouble of needing to have an alternative logo design for specific applications or an entire logo redesign. I prefer to look at this with the perspective of a one or two color print saves on printing costs especially for the less important company materials that are better suited to being reproduced sans-major expenses. The bright, colorful and complicated logos should be reserved for online applications and the more high-end print reproduction of the company such as formal invitations to company events, etc. Kudu Outdoor Products is a start up company in North America and had the following request in their design brief: “We sell custom outdoor products like deer blind windows and doors as well as custom hunting blinds. We also sell other hunting related accessories.” The following points to communicate through this logo design was specifically requested as Durability, Quality, and Product use. After identifying the target audience I felt that the color blue and strong sans-serifed fonts would invoke the feeling of trust and security as well as bring in a sense of higher quality product. For portfolio purposes I have used a single color version of the logo. CORPORATE IDENTITY GROWING IN GRACE MINISTRIES FIRMANCHOR BUSINESS CARDS LEGACY SIGN GROUP It is important to understand various cultures and their norms as a graphic designer in order to not create and offensive design by accident. Therefore when designing for religious groups it is important to have an understanding of what the clientele of such organization seek when committing to such organizations. Personally a place of worship should feel comforting and welcoming yet in the same breath and air of seriousness as it is a place of learning and paying respect. An anchor is the “safety net” of a ship. With this concept in mind this business card was designed with still blue waters to invoke trust in the viewer. For a client to trust a “sign group” it is imperative that their own signage conveys the expertise and quality that they would aim to provide their clientele with. With the above-mentioned in mind the colors for Growing in Grace Ministries was selected with the intention of the green conveying the idea of growth and a welcoming aura and the gold signifying the serious side of religion through the practice of worship and learning. The vine inspired accents play on the olive leaf from Noah and the Ark. Firmanchor as a company needs their clientele to trust them as they work with the designation of client finances, an area in which trust is imperative for such a company to be successful. This is an excellent example of understanding what the company you are designing for do and what is involved with their line of work. Understanding the background of a company and the procedures involved in their order of business is fundamental to understanding what visuals are pleasing and convey the expected message to the viewer. Each design is a representation of it’s company. It is good practice as a designer when conceptualizing a logo to recognize whether signage would be necessary and how the logo concept would translate to that application. CORPORATE IDENTITY PMMBG, PLLC THE BLUE BOX Many clients believe that their logo should suit their personal tastes. Although a logo design should be pleasing towards it’s owner it is also important to keep in mind that the logo should be pleasing to the audience it is being created for and the goal of attracting said client. The Blue Box is a mid to upper class coffeehouse and roastery where one can purchase coffee in all it’s forms as well as coffee beans and other craft produced products. The primary necessities expressed in this design brief read as follows: “We are a full service South Texas lawfirm with a heavy emphasis on oil and gas and real estate.” The following points to communicate through this logo design was specifically requested as Experience, Expertise, and Dedication. The target audience of Texas land & mineral owners & small business owners prompted a minimalistic, crisp, professional and elegant design. The logo prompted a minimalist yet expressive design in which the name of the company makes up the shape of a coffee mug. The reason for this decision was that the name “The Blue Box” does not necessarily convey the exact order of business hence imagery was used to convey this understanding. No design choice should be arbitrary and should be initiated with purpose. An example to the contrary of this statement would be having the company name of “The Blue Box” yet designing the logo and using the color pink. Certain design circumstances allow for such paradox design thinking, but thought must be put into it. “Design Thinking is an interactive process in which we seek to understand the user, challenge assumptions, and redefine problems in an attempt to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding. At the same time, Design Thinking provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It is a way of thinking and working as well as a collection of hands-on methods.” SA STUDBOOK Since 2016 I have worked on various projects for The SA Stud Breeders’ Society. These projects included Calendars, Banners, Flags, License Disc Stickers, Vehicle Magnets, Newsletters, Flyers, Business Cards, Letterheads, E-mail signatures, Brochures, Certificates, Invitations, E-mail Signatures, Electronic advertisements and Invitations, Electronic Newsletters, Electronic Flyers and Annual Journals. These projects allowed me to flex my skills in diverse fields such as working with a range of different clients, layout design, advertising, working with typography, UV Spot Varnish, Foiling, binding and finding creative solutions each year. ADVERTISING THE CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, FREE STATE: LIEBE VOERE: CAREER FAIR POSTERS I was approached by Liebe Voere with the request of redesigning their pet food brochures and campaigning an entire new “look & feel”. Event information must be communicated clearly and efficiently. When working with outdoor advertising space it is important to keep in mind that the viewers will most likely be driving or walking by which limits the amount of time they have in order to absorb and process the information being conveyed. It is therefore advisable to use only the absolutely necessary information in order to keep your text visible and legible. PET FOOD BROCHURES With this in mind I decided to design along the direction of something “hip” and modern such as the photograph of the dog taking a selfie. Although this scene would not be logically possible the imagery would leave a lasting impression on the viewer making the brand memorable and entertaining. For the additional flyer I decided to venture in the direction of the bond shared between pet and owner. WAR MUSEUM OF THE BOER REPUBLICS: PROGRAMME BOOKLETS As mentioned before it is important to understand the background of your clientele in order to fulfill their design needs efficiently. When approached by the War Museum for the programme design for one of their more significant events my thought process steered in the direction of developing an iconic image. Not only was this image to invoke the emotions of the viewers, but it had to represent the War Museum and South Africa before the attending Doctors and Professors from around the World. ADVERTISING EUNICE PRIMARY SCHOOL: LANDMARK: BLOEM SPA: ALL GIRLS SPORTS FESTIVAL PROGRAMME BOOKLET TENT CALENDARS SERVICE BROCHURE Every once in a while a projects comes along that is more enjoyable than others and the end products becomes something that makes you, as the designer, think back on it and feel proud of your work. With the task of designing promotional material for a company who handles the insurance and important money matters of farm owners throughout South Africa, it was particularly important to create a design that was refreshing yet still made sense as farm owners tend to stray from abstract ideology and think more logically. When designing brochures with price allocations it is imperative that the information is laid out clearly and in a structured way as to avoid any misinterpretations or misunderstandings. This was the case with these programme booklets. Through my design choices I aimed to motivate, inspire and assist in making the girls feel at ease throughout the duration of this competitive tournament. Working closely with the client, the imagery was selected and placed in such a way as to coincide with what generally happens during the various months of the year on a farm, for example, harvesting and ploughing. In the same breath the design needs to be visually appealing and any visuals must be relatable and attractive. In advertising the viewer needs to be guided into thinking and feeling: “Wow, I need that!” Whether the product or service is a necessity or simply something they would like to have or experience.
