Dr. Catherine is an award winner of the Prof. Josephine Nambooze Women in Medicine award by the Uganda Medical Association. She has over 10 years’ experience and skills in Public Health and Gender and Social inclusion at international levels. She is currently the Regional Gender inclusivity advisor East and Central Africa at Solidaridad. Previously she worked as the Gender and Social inclusion specialist at the South Sudan Health Pooled Fund with Health Partners International/DAI Global Health. She has a Masters Degree in Gender studies and a Masters Degree in Public health. Catherine has over the years supported various organizations, national government departments, and donors as a gender and social inclusion advisor to carry out social and gender analysis, gender audits and impact assessments of proposed projects; and developed gender strategies to implement gender responsive programs. She has therefore over the years built up skills related to gender mainstreaming in programs for humanitarian and development contexts within sectors of Health, livelihoods, Agriculture, Human rights, Peace and conflict resolution. Key successes have included the development of the gender strategy for the South Sudan Ministry of health and the development of a gender strategy for the Uganda Ministry of Health in collaboration with Center for disease control and prevention and key stakeholders. Dr. Catherine provided input in the development of Gender Specific indicators for the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) that are currently used globally to track gender/social norms and GBV in HIV/AIDS programming.

Dr. Catherine Odenyo Ndekera has worked in the health field at senior level at both National and International levels. Her medical background with an additional Masters in Public Health and a Masters in Gender studies makes her expertise sought for at both National and International levels in programming that seeks equality and inclusion for all.

On the 12th November 2022, at the Grand Doctors Conference, Dr. Catherine Odenyo Ndekera received the Prof. Josephine Nambooze Women in Medicine award by the Uganda Medical Association. An award provided by the Uganda Medical Association to a Doctor who has exhibited dedication and passionate leadership in Gender equality and public health
