Carmela Kris Armilla

I am currently working as Science Editor 1 for the Sylvatrop Journal, the official technical journal of the DENR on Philippine ecosystems and natural resources. I edit, proofread, and layout technical articles on various subjects relating to Philippine ecosystems, consolidate technical comments for the double blind peer review process, liaise with the members of the Sylvatrop Editorial Board, and perform secretariat tasks for the said journal. I also occasionally write speeches and messages for DENR or ERDB officials.

Previously, I worked as a Project Assistant for the Asia-Pacific Islands Rural Advisory Services Network (APIRAS). As a Project Assistant, I covered and documented events held in Thailand, Singapore, Fiji, and the Philippines, communicated with international partners and affiliations, set up international long-distance video calls and livestreams, prepared communication and knowledge materials, managed social media platforms for APIRAS (i.e., Facebook and Twitter), among others.

Additionally, I worked as a Technical Support Staff at the Graduate School of the University of the Philippines Los Baños where I prepared reports, news articles, and other relevant documents for the said institution.

As an undergraduate, I was an intern for RARE (Philippines), an international non-government organization funded by USAID, advocating sustainable fishing practices and community empowerment. With a team of students, I wrote, recorded (voice over talent), and produced learning modules and school-on-the-air (SOA) episodes on financial literacy for a fishing community in Surigao. These SOA modules were also designed according to the needs of the communities from select provinces in the Philippines.

I was trained under the Bachelor of Science in Development Communication degree program, specifically in science communication, journalism, broadcast, and educational communication, and graduated with honors (cum laude) in 2017.
