Professional Background
The Pacific Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley
Bellevue, Washington
Team Research Partner and Portfolio Manager
Oct 2013-Jan 2020
Responsible for all research and investment management operations for a team of ten advisers with close to $2
billion in assets under management.
- Built and maintained team asset allocation models across multiple investment platforms.
- Led all ongoing due-diligence on managed assets and alternative investments.
- Regularly interacted with clients and prospects to discuss the current state of the market and review
investment performance.
- Led the preparation and execution of monthly and quarterly portfolio management meetings for all ten
advisers on our team. Deliverables for these meetings included: managed assets size and composition
report, allocation summaries, Zephyr analysis, updates on PM positioning and upcoming market events.
- Created a monthly market update note in 2016 and continued to produce one each month for the remainder
of my tenure with the team. Reports were distributed it to all partners and senior management.
- Supported the team with on-going marketing and business development efforts by producing all investment
related marketing materials and pitch books, participating in prospect delivery meetings, and regularly
updating the team website.
Notable Accomplishments:
Portfolio Management Directly Supported Business Growth: Our team’s assets under management more than
doubled after I assumed the role of lead Portfolio Manager for my team in 2014. Growth was driven by two factors:
1) positive performance of assets under management; and 2) senior partners had more time to focus on business
development. Performance improved after establishing a set of risk management rules that helped us reduce and
avoid major losses which had hampered team performance and client retention in the past. Senior partners could
focus on business development efforts because they trusted me to manage the team’s book with limited
supervision.
Led New Partner Education: From 2015 to 2019, our team grew from four to ten advisers. During this time, I took
responsibility for training new partners about our portfolio processes and style, then offered consistent operational
support as they consolidated their books into our custom allocation models. Consolidation enabled them to
significantly improve the scalability of their business and focus more time on business development.
Assumed Critical Team Management Role: Shortly after assuming all PM duties for the team, I quickly realized that
my role filled a critical void in our team’s management structure. We needed someone that could wear two hats –
one of operations manager and one as an adviser. Having proposed the idea to our senior partners, we formalized
this management role so that I could effectively serve as a bridge between advisers and our operations staff. This
allowed me to focus on coordinating duties between team members to improve the overall productivity and
cohesion of the team, and enhance our ability to offer all clients a standard level of care. As a recent performance
review attests: “Betsy is passionate about keeping order in what could rapidly become a chaotic system, and
providing information and insight to multiple team members.”
Presentations and Publications: Completed a custom white-paper entitled “Planning for a Liquidity Event” in 2014
that was eventually adopted by the firm as a leading resource for advisers specializing in pre-IPO and business
succession planning. Offered formal presentations for clients, prospects, and a select group of realtors in the Seattle
area on China’s impact on financial markets in late 2015/early 2016.
