I use recommended coding standards of wordpress to ensure proper performance of website , Simple words I use proper hooks and filters of wordpress and do not touch the core files , means you can properly update your plugins , theme and core files in future without the fear to loss of the custom work . I do the light weight coding and use the object oriented approach to manage the code . 

The beauty of my way is that i use wordpress way ( hooks and filters) to modify. means i do not change core files of wordpress or plugins for modify or update functionality. Means you can update the wodpress and plugins core any time when update comes.
