This mining company is responsible for producing about 5 different types of minerals found in the soil in this region. To be able to extract the minerals from the soil certain process had to be followed and a separation plant was used for this. I have worked at Namakwa Sands every holiday that was long enough for me to gain extra experience in the Electrical field. I started off in the Electrical department to get to know the entire system and work alongside the Electrical Technicians which was responsible for maintaining everything from Conveyors 3 phase motors, VSD’s, Emergency stop systems, PLC’s, and High Voltage Mains Transformer malfunction. I was also working on the instrumentation side which exposed me to level sensors, flow meters, limit switches, electromagnetic coils and general automation of the separation plant. In the Final section stage of working for the company I was tasked to develop a database system for all conveyor systems and electrical motors driving these systems, for ease of maintenance. I was also tasked to do general research with regards to unscheduled downtime as a result of bad maintenance schedules. 2009 - 2010 Junior Electrical Engineer Endress & Hauser Endress & Hauser is one of the Leading Instrumentations companies in the world. I was doing my inservice training as a Junior Electrical Engineer at the company. This company introduced me to an extensive Instrumentation field, ranging from Mass Flow Meters, Ultrasonic Level sensors to Data loggers etc. This company exposed me to various fields including Factories, Mines, Distilleries, water reservoirs etc. The company provided us with the opportunity to design, develop and build a testing bench for their pre and after market support. 2011 - 2012 Junior Electrical Engineer (Part time) Electric Blue Electric Blue is a Lighting company that specialises in effect lighting for General businesses, Office Buildings, Malls, Houses, Nightclubs etc. While completing my Masters degree I had some spare time on my hands while waiting for parts to arrive that I needed for my Project. Therefore for some extra experience I started to do part time projects for this company which ranged from PCB design, programming, electronic designs and problem solving of new technologies used by the company. I was also working on the planning side of new installations. 2011 - 2012 Lecture (Part time) CPUT While completing my Masters degree, I had the opportunity to work for Cape Peninsula University of Technology as a Junior Lecturer for 1 semester (6 months). I lectured one of the Practical subjects where I taught 2nd year students to Design electronic PC boards. After that I taught them how to populate the PCB’s. The subject also involved designing and manufacturing of practical enclosures for the electrical power supplies which they have designed. Once they have populated their electronic PCB’s and started to assemble their projects, myself and in service training tutors helped the students to develop logical problem solving abilities and teach them why certain designs would not work by demonstrating this in a practical environment. I was also in charge of the final assessment and moderation. 2011 – 2014 Masters Degree CPUT I was provided a scholarship from the National Research Fund (NRF) funded by our National Electrical Utility Company (Eskom) to do some research, design and develop a Self Sustainable Energy Harvesting device (Instrument) that could be implemented 100 - 200 kVA pole mount transformers. I designed, developed and produced a fully functional artefact Intelligent Current Transformer that clamps onto the secondary phase cables of a 11kV high voltage pole mount transformer. I designed this device to use the magnetic fields produced by the secondary phase cables of the transformers to convert the magnetic fields into usable energy for energy harvesting purposes. This method was used to generate an endless supply of energy to the intelligent transformer monitoring device. I also used the magnitude of the Magnetic fields to determine the primary current flowing through the pole mount transformers secondary phase cables. Therefore with this information at hand, we could determine at what capacity the transformers operated at. This information was then wirelessly transmitted to a central location called a Base station and from there it could be uploaded to the Internet if wished to do so. The first section designs and manufactures dive support systems (Dive bells, A Frames, Decompression Chambers etc.) for the marine offshore industry. The second section of the company specifies in the Marine services industry, concentrating on Dynamic Positioning systems (Kongsberg, Converteam, Marine technology etc.), Kongsberg automation, Dive alert systems. I have been trained in both Kongsberg DP and Automation. On the DP side I have completed a DP introduction course as well as an internal DP maintenance course. Our company had a fully equipped DP training centre and provided training to various DPO’s, basic and advanced. Therefore I have received allot of on hands training on the DP equipment inside our training centre. With this our company has also been accredited to perform DP annual trials as well as FMEA trials which I have been exposed to and performed myself. I have also been involved in a complete DP upgrade, converting a vessel that did not have a DP system onboard into a DP 1 vessel. We also provide technical support with regards to new installations and technical support to aftermarket problems on reference systems (DGPS, Cyscan, Fanbeam, Tautewire, transponders etc.) as well as systems like Gyro’s, wind sensors and DP UPS’s. On the Kongsberg automation side, we have attended a 1 month hardware and software course in Horten Norway which covered the entire range of Kongsberg Automation and Alarm monitoring equipment. In our field of expertise we are responsible for providing service and solutions to Cargo carriers, Container vessels, LNG tankers, Oil tankers, offshore supply vessels, Dive support vessels, Dredging vessels etc. I have personally worked on all of these systems in the time span of working for Unique Hydra. This includes programming PLC’s and interfacing into Kongsbergs automation and monitoring systems. The system is composed of HMI, Scada, PLC’s, LAN, CAN Networks and various sensor types for monitoring. The Automation system controls the Power Monitoring System of the vessel including most breakers, generator synchronisation, heavy fuel oil feed, air etc. 2015 – 2018 Electrical Field Service Engineer Rolls – Royce / MTU Power Systems Working for Rolls-Royce South Africa, I was assisting in starting the new branch in Cape Town as it was the first Rolls Royce Marine Company in South Africa. I was mainly employed to do all Marine vessel services where technical crew on-board the vessels could not resolve technical issues. This includes Setup, Scaling, Programming, Fault-finding of all Dynamic Positioning, Thruster and Engine controls on-board. This also includes all setup, programming and fault-finding of all Rolls-Royce Automation systems. In order to do all of the above, I have completed advanced training courses at Kamewa and Aquamaster to be qualified for working on these systems. While working at Rolls-Royce, I have also been trained on the MTU Engines and am able to Install, Setup and Program these engines for Power generation, Mining vehicles or Marine Applications. 2018 - 2019: Sales Engineer Offshore Oil and Gas: Rolls Royce Power Systems (MTU) Working as a sales engineer at Rolls-Royce Power Systems (MTU) providing clients with engineered Power, Propulsion and Automation solutions for vessels in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry.
