1.
Oversee and facilitate the entire procurement process for the acquisition of all goods and services
i.e. drafting of specifications, drafting Tender documents, source suppliers, advertise tenders,

BACKGROUND:
THE COMRADES MARATHON ASSOCIATION (CMA) was
founded in 1921. The CMA is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) made up
of approximately 1,000 members and governed by its Board. The CMA
organizes and hosts the annual Comrades Marathon 90km ultra-marathon
road race event in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal in the Republic of
South Africa.

DUTIES:
1.
Oversee and facilitate the entire procurement process for the acquisition of all goods and services
i.e. drafting of specifications and ATP’s (Authority to Procure documents), development of detailed
Tender documents and Quotation enquiry documents, source suppliers, advertise large value
tenders, manage the tender compliance and proposal evaluation process, Chair the Procurement
Committees.

Development and implementation of Contract Management procedures and documentation
(including drafting of Service Level Agreements).
3.
Formulation of a Procurement system/unit, development & implementation of a new 47-page
Procurement Policy and procedures, and various procurement framework documents & forms. The
Procurement Policy and procedures were approved by the CMA Board and implemented in
September 2014.
4.
Lead the supplier contract and price negotiations prior to awarding of contracts and tenders, and
make recommendations to contract. Negotiate with suppliers as far as possible in order to achieve
cost savings on procurement purchases for goods and services.

Sponsor Engagement which includes coordinating Sponsor Event activations. These engagements
include pre-event, on-event and post-event in relation to Sponsor requirements, activations and
budgets.

Monitor procurement transactions so as to ensure alignment with each portfolio’s respective
approved budgets. Ongoing review of available budgets prior to finalisation of the procurement
process.

Perform the role of an Events Coordinator and Project Manager for all the various CMA events (29
events in the calendar year). This includes the procurement of all required contractors and suppliers
(e.g. venues for events, security, entertainment, caterers, guest speakers etc.), as well as the
management of all these appointed contractors before and during the events. This includes
performing operational tasks at times while working under very strict timeframes.
8.
Management of the Comrades Marathon Finish Venue Portfolio, including the staff and 70
volunteers, during the build-up period of the event (three weeks), as well as on the Comrades
Marathon Race Day. This responsibility required me to work overtime, extraordinary hours during
evenings, on weekends and on public holidays for the race event preparation and build-up period.
9.
Implementation and Management of the CMA’s Suppliers Database and ensuring that suppliers and
service providers comply with all the prescribed Procurement requirements. Regular updating and
maintenance of the database of approved suppliers, as well as the sourcing and registration of new
suppliers on the CMA Suppliers Database.
10. Compiling and generating Procurement Progress Reports to Management and the Board.
11. I ensure effective record keeping and storage of all the received stock that has been procured, as
well as sponsored product e.g. branded clothing and merchandise, memorabilia items, branded
footwear, beverage consignments etc. Coordinate the distribution of all the stock and product to
various Comrades Marathon race portfolios and volunteer groups, and management of the donation
process of leftover product and merchandise to charitable organisations.
12. People Management of an Events support team of 4 students for a period of 6 months in the lead-up
to the event.
13. I also served as a fully functional committee member of the CMA Finance Committee, Corporate
Governance Committee, Human Resources Committee, Finish Venue Selection Committee and
Staff CSI Projects Convener.

Supply Chain Management for fourteen (14) client offices/business units in the KwaZulu-Natal
Province.
