The Scrum Master Coach supports Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) IT by training and guiding IT Team Leads to run effective Scrum events, reinforce Agile principles, manage incidents, remove impediments, and apply both Scrum and Kanban practices to improve team productivity. This hybrid coaching/facilitation role focuses on helping Team Leads self-organize, use tracking tools correctly, follow processes, collaborate effectively, and deliver value aligned with IT leadership priorities. The role includes daily coaching on backlog management, continuous workflow progress, and effective reporting.

Agile certification required (Scrum Master minimum)

Facilitate and Train IT Team Leads:

• Teach Team Leads to run Scrum events: stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and board cleanups.

• Improve ceremony quality, including story writing, prioritization, ticket hygiene, and meeting effectiveness.

• Observe, document, and reinforce best practices to support accountability, transparency, and progress tracking.

• Ensure Team Leads become organized, informed, tool-proficient, and aligned with priorities.

Coach Teams and Coach IT Leads to Coach Their Teams:

• Demonstrate and coach Scrum and Kanban practices to foster self-organization and continuous improvement.

• Ensure alignment with leadership priorities for both operational and development teams.

• Support teams in addressing issues, making recommendations, and managing incidents collaboratively.

Analyze and Remove Impediments:

• Train Team Leads to identify blockers, manage incidents, and use project management tools effectively.

• Support dependency analysis and teach how to incorporate it into team ceremonies.

Daily Backlog Management:

• Partner with Technical Leads and IT Management to teach proper backlog hygiene, prioritization, clarity, and maintenance.

Promote Continuous Improvement:

• Facilitate retrospectives and ensure actionable improvements are defined, scheduled, and followed through.

Reinforce Process Adherence:

• Guide adherence to GDOT’s chosen frameworks—Scrum for developers, Kanban for operations.

• Train on Kanban practices including WIP limits, workflow visualization, and documentation of repeatable tasks.

Foster Collaboration:

• Strengthen communication and coordination between Scrum and Kanban teams to support successful incremental deployments.

Drive Team Effectiveness:

• Improve team output, quality, and collaboration.

• Document training and best practices in a living Working Agreement for clarity on roles and expectations.

• Expertise in Scrum and Kanban methodologies and principles.

• Strong facilitation, coaching, mentoring, and documentation skills.

• Ability to analyze and resolve impediments and team conflicts.

• Experience managing and prioritizing backlogs aligned with leadership direction.

• Excellent communication across teams, leads, architects, PMs, and stakeholders.

• Proficient in Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence), ServiceNow (ITSM & Agile), MS Teams, and Office 365.

• Strong servant-leadership mindset and ability to empower teams.

• Agile certification required (Scrum Master minimum).
