Cable TV in Mexico
According to the latest report of the IFT (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones) or in
English, the Federal Institute of Telecommunications, there were 17.4 million subscribers
of cable tv in Mexico at the end of the third quarter of 2015, meaning 53% of Mexican
homes had access to it.
Televisa Group owns several cable and satellite tv subsidiaries like Sky which has a market
share of 38.2%, Cablemas of 7.4%, Cablecom has 4.5%, Cablevisión 5.4%, Cablevisión
Red 2.7% and TVI 2.7%; giving Televisa a total market share of 60.9%. The group recently
purchased Telecable.
Dish-MVS (satellite tv) came in second place with a market share of 16.2% and Megacable
(cable tv) in third with a market share of 15.1%. The rest of the market belongs to minor
companies like Total Play, Maxcom, Ultravisión, TV Rey, Aire Cable and Axtel-Avantel.
The number of people subscribed to satellite tv increased by one million in one year, going
from a market share of 56.6% to 57.2%, and the number of people subscribed to cable tv
increased from 7.1 million to 7.8 million; however, its market share decreased from 43.4%
to 42.8%.
Izzi Telecom
Televisa Group is also the owner of Izzi Telecom which offers cable tv, phone and Internet
services in Mexico City, Monterrey and other cities in the country. By absorbing and
unifying the operations of its other subsidiaries like Cablemas, Cablecom, Cablevisión and
others, Televisa hopes to expand the Izzi brand at a national level. In 2015 Izzi Telecom
started to replace some of Televisa's other subsidiaries.
They offer these packages:
PackTV: 50+ channels for $179 pesos.
PackHD: 140+ channels, 48 of them in HD for $400 pesos.
PackHDMax: 180+ channels, 48 of them in HD. It includes a dvr for $600 pesos.
Customers that already have one or two services with Izzi pay $150 pesos for Pack TV,
$300 pesos for Pack HD and $500 pesos for PackHDMax.
Same fees in Monterrey.
Cablecom
Cablecom doesn't provide its services in Mexico City or Monterrey.
They offer the following packages:
Minibásico: 44 channels for $218 pesos.
Básico: 91 channels for $315 pesos.
Digital 3.0: 35 more channels than Básico for $100 pesos more.
Básico Digital: 39 channels on HD for $150 pesos more Básico’s fee.
HD 3.0: 39 channels on HD 3D for $200 pesos more than Básico’s fee.
Triple Play:
Mini Básico + phone + 2Mb internet = $416 pesos.
Básico + phone + 3 Mb internet = $519 pesos.
Básico + phone + 5 Mb internet = $623 pesos.
HD 3.0 with DVR + phone + 10Mb internet = $1040 pesos.
Sky (satellite TV) offers:
Básico: 178 channels for $299 pesos.
Fun: 222 channels for $429 pesos.
Fox+: 231 channels for $589 pesos.
HBO/MAX: 233 channels for $599 pesos.
Universe: 248 channels for $799 pesos.
Telecable
In some cities Izzi has now replaced it, in others the fees are as follows:
TV pop: 48 channels for $186 pesos.
TV Básico: 92 channels for $323 pesos.
Mini digital: 58 channels more than TV Básico for $348 pesos.
Básico Digital: 96 channels more than TV Básico for $384 pesos.
Cablevisión
It has already been replaced by Izzi in Mexico City and Monterrey; however, there are
people that still have its tv service, these are old customers who subscribed before the
transition to Izzi started and haven´t changed their package. Cablevisión still offers phone
and internet services to new customers.
These are the packages:
Pack tv pro with 264 channels = $600 pesos.
Pack tv Hd+ with 220 channels = $450 pesos.
Pack tv Hd with 89 channels = $300 pesos
Pack tv with 61 channels = $179 pesos.
