INTRODUCTION-
Smartphones are phones with superior technology. They come with excellent features that go beyond the basic phone’s capabilities.
A smartphone is a type of cell phone that can do many of the things that a computer can. These cellular phones can usually, for instance, access the internet and take photographs, as well as letting you video chat with friends and loved ones.
Smartphones are small enough to fit in our pocket. However, they carry the strength of a home desktop computer. In addition, smartphones have several physical features that set them apart from regular mobile phones. Perhaps the key difference is the fact that smartphones have a touch-screen.
Smart phone is a mobile phone which offers advanced technologies with functionality similar as a personal computer. While offering a standardized platform for application developers a smart phone performs as complete operating system software. Secondly, there are also very advanced features in smart phones such as internet, instant messenger and e-mail and also built-in keyboard are very typical. Because of these reasons we can say a smart phone a miniature computer with the similarities of a simple phone.
With the growing speed of technological advancement, Smart phones have become the essential components of our daily performance. As we look for convenience, we also respect the devices, which can combine multiple features and which give us more mobility and entertainment. As the whole world is going into the new phase of technological performance, our needs become more sophisticated. On the one hand, we need speed, quality, and effectiveness on the other hand, these features should be combined in a solution small enough to carry it in the pocket.
Smart phones have come to exemplify one of the wisest and the most convenient technological ideas in the history of mankind. The unique combination of features makes Smart phones extremely usable and useful for different purposes. In business or in pleasure Smart phones expand our capabilities and help us resolve our problems in timely manner.
This is because of the growing speed of all decision-making processes in business and life that technological companies have come to the need for developing a new unique technological device. Usually, ``a Smartphone combines the functions of a cellular phone and a handheld computer in a single device. It differs from a normal phone in that it has an operating system and local storage, so udders can add and store information, send and receive email, and install programs to the phone as they could with a PDA Yuan. A Smartphone may also be referred to as a cellular...
HISTORY-
The first commercially available device that could be properly referred to as a "smartphone" began as a prototype called "Angler" developed by Frank Canova in 1992 while at IBM and demonstrated in November of that year at the COMDEX computer industry trade show. A refined version was marketed to consumers in 1994 by BellSouth under the name Simon Personal Communicator. In addition to placing and receiving cellular calls, the touch screen-equipped Simon could send and receive faxes and emails. It included an address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock and notepad, as well as other visionary mobile applications such as maps, stock reports and news. The term "smart phone" or "smartphone" was not coined until a year after the introduction of the Simon, appearing in print as early as 1995, describing AT&T's Phone Writer Communicator.
Ericsson was the first brand to actually coin the phrase “smartphone”, with the release of its GS88 in 1997. By all accounts, though, Nokia actually beat Ericson to the finish line a year earlier with what many consider to be the quintessential smartphone, the Nokia 9000 Communicator.
I remember, in fact, watching promotional spots on TechTV in about 2001, where a later version of the Communicator (dubbed the 9500) was being advertised. It was the first of the Nokia smartphones to carry a colour screen, setting it apart in the race.
It might seem that we’re skipping a few years here, but that’s somewhat intentional. Devices changed pretty drastically between 2002 and today, but the operating systems were largely unaffected. That is, at least, until 2007.
When Apple Inc. introduced the iPhone, it was the first real change that we saw in the market since the market was born. Smartphones had always been seen more along the lines of something that business people used, and Apple did a rather magnificent job translating the idea over to something that a consumer would desire.
Initially, however, the iPhone and its platform were seen to be entirely too closed (an argument that persists today, but for different reasons) because it lacked the ability to have third-party applications installed. It wasn’t until six months later that the ability to add third-party apps was introduced.
Both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android boast high customer loyalty numbers, and pre-release sales of the Microsoft Lumia 800 would lead one to believe that it will enjoy the same. It’s been a long road to get us to where we are today, but the history of smartphones is an interesting journey. What does the future hold? You can be sure that The Next Web will be there, documenting every step along the way.
CURRENT OR CONTEMPORARY ISSUES OR USE –
Here are top ten burning issues of smartphones:
Big Data
e-Commerce
Social Media
Shift of Ad Spending to Digital
Audience Targeting vs. Media Location
Measuring Digital Media Campaigns
Growth of Smartphones & Tablets
Multi-Platform Media Planning & Analysis
Real-Time Marketing Insights
Privacy
1. Big Data
“Big data” is a moniker for the explosion in data that has occurred as a result of dramatic increases in computing power coupled with sharp drops in the cost of both computing and data storage. These trends have resulted in a literal torrent of data as consumers go about their daily lives using and interacting with computers in a wide variety of ways.
2. e-Commerce
Driven by lower prices, convenience and the broadest selection of products, online consumer spending is soaring. comScore data show that in the last twelve months $304 billion was spent via e-commerce in the U.S., with Travel accounting for $110 billion and Non-Travel (aka Retail e-Commerce) pulling in $194 billion. Retail e-Commerce now accounts for one in every ten discretionary dollars spent by U.S. consumers and in Q4 grew 15% versus the prior year, a rate about five times faster than for all consumer spending at retail.
3. Social Media
comScore data show that social media has just eclipsed portals in share of time spent on the Internet. In November Facebook attracted 150 million unique visitors in the U.S. alone while accounting for 10% of total minutes spent online. But it’s not just Facebook that comprises social: In the same month in the U.S., LinkedIn attracted 41 million monthly unique visitors, Twitter saw 40 million, Google+ attracted 29 million, while Pinterest and Instagram each received more than 25 million visitors.
4. Shift of Ad Spending to Digital
Advertising spending has been shifting to the Internet at a rapid rate, with the IAB reporting that online advertising in Q3 increased by 18% over last year. For the first three quarters of 2012, the increase was 15% -- far greater than the increase of 3.8% in spending for all measured media during the same time period.
5. Audience Targeting vs. Media Location
The rise in computerized cookie-based audience buying has been aided by the availability of demand side platforms and real time exchanges. It’s now estimated that about 20% of all display ad impressions are bought via real time bidding and that this level is growing rapidly. The benefits of programmatic audience buying have been well documented.
6. Measuring Delivery and Effectiveness of Digital Media Plans
Just over a year ago, the 3MS (“Making Measurement Make Sense”) initiative was launched by three key trade groups: the IAB, which represents online publishers; the ANA, which represents advertisers; and the 4A’s, the agency body. One of the key tenets of 3MS was moving digital measurement from a “served” ad impression to a “viewable” standard.
7. Growth of Smartphones and Tablets
The rate of growth in the use of smartphones and tablets has been astounding. More than 120 million people in the U.S. now own a smartphone, accounting for more than 50% of all mobile phone users and representing an increase of 30 million over the past year. More than 48 million people own a tablet, representing a staggering growth of 300% from last year. The tablet is, in fact, the fastest growing electronic device ever created.
8. Multi-Platform Media Planning and Analysis
Consumer consumption of media content is fragmenting across digital platforms at an accelerating rate. For example, originally-scripted TV content can now be viewed on the Internet using a PC or Mac -- and increasingly via mobile and portable devices; TV ads are being delivered online; and sports programming is being viewed live on smartphones.
FUTURE ISSUES-
Let's jump to the future, where real wireless power (I’m talking about a feature that works similar to Wi-Fi -- not the cradle/pad version) is ubiquitous, screens are transparent and our smartphones are by-products of advanced AI.
To truly appreciate the design process of a smartphone, we only need to look at the source and limit of all its features, the power unit of the phone: the battery.
The battery size ends up defining just about everything we know and love in a smartphone: the computational power of the CPU, the resolution of the screen, the pixel count of the camera, the available memory on the device and, of course, the speed of the internet. Once the battery size is defined, consuming the battery's available power becomes the single most important resource. If a phone had unlimited power sent over the air, the battery would not have to store so much power. Without the need for extra storage power, the battery itself could be smaller, leaner and much more efficient, leaving room to develop other features within the hardware that were previously impossible.
For years, different smartphone companies have imagined that phones would become transparent, AR-type devices that would integrate into the world around us. In 2013, Poltroons Technologies general manager Sam Yu told Macworld that the transparent phone would become a reality by the end of that same year. Obviously, that never came to fruition.
The impact of wireless power, transparent screens and evolving AI will profoundly change the way we use our smartphones. I bet you that in 10 years, if you were to go into your attic or garage and find some old device that had a power port and required a cord to plug in, you would laugh with nostalgic delight that such a device was once a "thing." After all, as American philosopher A. B. Johnson once said, "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow."
The reason we have not been able to get to achieve this is the hardware needed to make the phone run. Of course, the aforementioned battery is the biggest culprit. But if we can significantly reduce the battery size -- and potentially make the glass screen a power source in and of itself -- and manufacturers are able to print transparent, flexible silicon chips, then we may get to a place where transparent, potentially flexible smartphone screens can become a reality. This will not only make our phones substantially lighter, but think about the possibilities for VR and 3-D viewing.
Finally, the evolution of AI and machine learning could transport our smartphones into direct brain-machine interfaces.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SMARTPHONES-
Advantages of using a Smartphone
1. Apps!
Smartphone apps keep us entertained with games, informed with news, and savvy with our online shopping. All these applications that are either included in the phone or you can easily download from the internet.
2. Maps and Navigation.
There is no need to feel lost ever again when you have a smartphone at your proposal. Smartphones have got free turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation. Use GPS to pinpoint your location and the map function to plan your route.
3. Camera.
The most effective camera will be the one that you have with you. A lot of people would never go out without their mobile phone, therefore the next time you fail to bring your camera to a wedding ceremony you are in luck due to the camera on the smartphone. Never ever miss out on unique moments yet again!
4. Search information on net.
Perhaps you have been in a debate with a buddy regarding something and you are sure that you are right, but they don’t believe you. Using a smartphone, it is simple to find that info very quickly. Apart from coming in handy for fixing arguments, a smartphone is also a smart way to search nearly anything easily and quickly.
5. Staying in touch.
Whereas a regular cell phone let you send SMS messages and call people, a smartphone enables you to get in touch with people in numerous other ways as well. Instant messaging, video chat services and social media are all at your disposal.
6. Utility software.
Smartphones comes with various utility software such as calculator, radio, voice recorder, memo, calendar, music player, etc. Your camera lights can be used as a flashlight. A handy calculator is always there to make your life easier. Listen to music over the radio. You use the calendar and plan your schedule. You can listen to news over the radio.
7. Bill payments.
More and more people are using their smartphones to pay bills. It is very handy to be able to whip out your phone during your morning commute and get a few chores done, like paying the water bill.
8. Entertainment – video, books, music, games, etc.
Smartphones have become your total entertainment system. When you can stream video content on your smartphone, you never need to be bored when waiting for a bus again. You can watch video on free apps such as YouTube. There are several music apps. Download your favourite books and use the phone as a Kindle reader.
8. Memo and Notes.
Are you among those individuals who carry a laptop around with you anywhere you go so that you can write down all the brilliant ideas? Forget the notebook and begin using a note application on your phone!
10. Email.
Email enables us to send and receive messages over internet network. The old days of sending and receiving physical messages are gone. Now, people send electronic messages (email) from the comfort of their smartphones. Business people, who cannot avoid travelling, can always keep updated with your emails.
Disadvantages of using Smartphone
1. Dependence.
When we are dependent on our smartphone for communicating and navigating the streets, we can lose our natural spatial awareness and communication skills. When our smartphone runs out of battery, we can feel totally helpless!
2. Damaging Relationships.
One one hand you are more connected to distant people by way of social media networks, messaging services, and so forth. However, you get so busy with your smartphone that you forget to spare time for the loved ones around you. Often couples decide to spend their time with each other looking at their phones instead of interacting with one another.
3. A challenge to use.
Smartphones are getting ever more sophisticated, and it can be hard to learn how to manipulate them. This is particularly true for aged ones. They are not used to getting adapted with the fast paced technological world.
The touch based keyboard on the smartphone is much smaller and not easy to use. It need immense practice before a person can get used to it.
3. Dominating Your Spare time.
Smartphones are incredibly adaptable gadgets, providing limitless opportunities to use your time up, whether or not proficiently or wastefully. Whilst it is hard to see an issue with this, there is one which can make you live a less fulfilling lifestyle.
4. Unwanted sites and apps.
Using unwanted sites apps consume a lot of data. There are many apps that comes pre-installed along with smartphone. Very often, we don’t need many of them. They often run in the background and update regularly. All this certainly result in high data consumption.
5. Chargers are more significant than everything else.
These days you can forget about your project even though you have a meeting but will always remember a charger.
6. Costs.
The cost of the handset itself can be pretty steep, but when you add maintenance costs, the cost of your contract and the cost of the additional data that you use when abroad, you can be saddled with a bill that is several times larger than the bill for a regular phone.
7. Security
Smartphones can access the web, either through data package or Wi-Fi. However, data protection is an issue. The applications you download and also the passwords which you input into these applications and sites while on-the-go tend to be insecure, at least when it comes to account privacy.
8. Eye strain.
Staring at a small, bright screen for hours on end can be very bad for your eyes – particularly if you do so in a dark room (for instance you bedroom when you can’t sleep). Just make sure that your give adequate rest to your eyes.
9. Insomnia.
The temptation to fiddle with your smartphone instead of sleeping can be too great, and can cost you many hours of restful sleep each week.
10. Distraction
Smartphones can distract you even when you want to focus on an important task at hand. It’s annoying when a phone rings at the middle of the meeting. Even during the office hours, employees are seen chatting with their online friends. This distraction can cause harm to the real business.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION-
The Smartphone is a tremendous technology that has transformed our world in a variety of different ways. In has exploded onto the mainstream market and has become a part of popular culture. It has revolutionized the motions of communication between people and allowed instant access to information in the palm of our hands. To think that one small device holds someone’s entire world says a lot about the importance of a Smartphone. It is something that the average person does not leave his or her home without. A Smartphone’s capabilities allow it to be such an essential part of our lives.
The future looks very promising for the Smartphone. In just a few years, Smartphones have become very popular, and it is almost unheard of for someone to not own one. As major developers create new ways in which we can use our Smartphone, the opportunities our endless. I certainly believe the S
smartphone will become more “human”, as we can already see a preview of that in Apple iPhone’s Siri.
Much of a Smartphone’s capabilities revolve around the applications that it offers. This is very important in determining the future of a Smartphone. Apps give Smartphones an extra edge that ordinary phones do no have. Such apps include advanced photo sharing, games, or Internet services. In the New York Magazine article, “The Future is Calling”, author Peter Andrey Smith discusses what the future may hold for the Smartphone. He gives here statement by Chris Harrison, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, who states, “that we’ll one day carry micro projectors, a quarter the size of the current smartphones, that will beam touch-screens onto any hard surface. “At Starbucks … instead of using the tiny screen, you use the big table in front of you.” (2012).
Cell phones have completely changed our world. People now use them for leisure time, business, school, and so much more. Cell phones are not just cell phones anymore. People rely on them for video chatting for conference calls, searching the web for nearby restaurants, taking pictures of their travels, using a GPS tracking system, etc. The majority of people own cell phones nowadays and people rely on them more than ever. Cell phones have become a part of everyday life and I could not imagine what it would be like having to live without having a cell phone. Being away at school I still am able to keep in contact with my parents and grandparents although I am far away from them. Cell phones are a vital service in the human connection because people are able to have connections that the past decades never imaged. The cell phone is an incredible invention that has altered our lives forever.
Cell phones have also changed our world because they add mobility, cheaper long distance calling, advanced technology, and evolving device. They make it easier for people to keep in communication with each other no matter where they are. Cell phones are bringing our world together by keeping the means of communication very close together because people have the capability of being in contact 24/7 whether its text messages or video chatting. As the cell phones are advancing and changing it is making the society change as well because everyone is extremely tech savvy from adapting to the futurist world we live in.
An interesting story that I came about helped me realized that cell phones are a great help to all types of people all over the world. The article was about a homeless man who had a prepaid cell phone. The article made me really appreciate cell phones and believe that they can do so much good for this world because this homeless man may be able to change his life around since he has a cell phone. He would be able to keep in contact with businesses and maybe even be able to find a job one day to get himself off of the streets. This story really caught my attention and I was inspired to think how cell phones are really impacted our society in every aspect.
The only thing that cell phones do not feature currently is being able to watch live television but I believe that will definitely be in store for the future. The creation of mobile phone television is already in process of being created and I cannot wait to see how this will affect our future society. People use other program viewers such as Hulu or Netflix to stream different movies and television shows on their cell phones. In the future, there will be a mobile television that will make it easier for viewers to stream television from their cell phone. If people were not already glued to their phones, now they will be carrying it everywhere they go because everything they could possibly want they will have access to.
Another futurist quality that cell phones might have is that they will be able to have projections. They will be equipped with a rotating screen and built-in projector. This would be a great feature for people in the business world because they will be able to have everything that they need for their presentation right in their cell phone. Otherwise, they would have to carry a flash drive or email themselves the presentation that they will be projecting.
Cell phones have created a multitasking ability that was never possibly before. People are able to text message, web search, and listen to music all at the same time. There are endless possibilities when it comes to cell phones and I think that the future of cell phones is going to be incredible. Even looking at the development of the cell phone is amazing because every so often there are so many new features added. I believe that cell phones are going to keep advancing to keep up with this ever-changing society we live in.
The opportunities available for the future of a Smartphone are endless. It will only take time to see which of these innovations will be a part of our everyday lives.
