Food’s Greatest Enemy By VLPantoja Looking back, farmers then have mastered their craft on how to organically breed and multiply crops. They discovered using manure of plant-eating animals as fertilizer causing the soil to be more fertile, giving a healthy breeding ground. In some parts of Asia, uprooted plants or bushes were layered on rice fields until they decay, to prepare the fields and keep the rice plants free from pests. These were traditional practices that never failed the farmers. Simple and natural, both crops and consumers then were healthy. In the instant pacing of technology, it has moved the world entirely in a different angle. It has displaced the order of every element connected to humans especially foods. Applied with biotechnology, crops and animals are made bountiful, instant, fuller and picture-perfect! But the more these foods scatter in marketplaces, the more people gather in hospitals for treatments of diseases—sometimes, an unknown disease. Encyclopedias in the past stated that cancer is most commonly genetics. But now, the internet has enumerated so many causes of cancer where “foods” lead the list. And Monsanto, which claims to be a sustainable agricultural company, has to take the blame. But would Monsanto take it? It used to be one of the largest chemical companies in the world, known to produce the best herbicides for the last 30 years. But now, it has become the world leader in bio-technology creating transgenic crops in as much as 250M acres of land all over the world. It highlights its vision for sustainability, providing the world with much food as needed in the heights of global climate change, wherein the arguments of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are based. But then, it does active harm especially in Africa and some places in Asia by promoting a form of anti-science. Monsanto targets developing countries which they deceive with more production, more sustainability and adaptability to climate change. But it seems that the faster these cells for bio-engineering of crops proliferate, the same speed it provides to human cells to propagate, causing the cells to become cancerous. Monsanto owns patents of 90% of GMOs including the recombinant bovine growth hormones (rBGH). These are genetically engineered hormones that are injected to cows to increase milk production by 20%. Monsanto sells these hormones with brand name Posilac. Although approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it has been criticized worldwide to be poisonous, causing the cows’ infertility and lameness. Dr. Samuel Epstein of Cancer Prevention Coalition said that the milk produced by these hormones has considerable increases in levels of Insulin-growth factor 1 (IGF1) which is potential to develop prostate and breast cancer. Its famous herbicide brand RoundUp is used to create roundup resistant genes that are injected to the seeds making them highly resistant to it. When this herbicide is sprayed on the plants, all the weeds die but the plants remain intact. Dr. Peter D’Adamo, the developer of Right for your type diet, excludes GMOs in his list of diet foods because they are herbicide resistant and detoxifies mycotoxins, a toxic chemical product from fungi. GMOs also contain lectin or other agglutinin and are proven to be metabolic inhibitors. They also contain components that are known disease susceptible. But the acquisition of Monsanto of over 50 seeds companies in the world is a great danger of dominating seeds production wiping out the naturally and organically produced ones. Monsanto is producing bio-engineered seeds—70% are round-up resistant seeds and 30% are genetically modified ones which are to be used in producing the insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), a bacteria that can be a source of insecticide. DECEPTIONS In 1996 and in 2011, Monsanto was found guilty of deception for its advertisement on RoundUp herbicide. It’s advertisement of claiming RoundUp to be biodegradable was found by courts as deceptive. Aside from the tests conducted that showed this herbicide to be highly toxic, only 2% of the product broke down after 28 days. It was also seen how fast roundup affects cell-division process, inciting cancer to develop, considering the doses tested was at a very minimal level. But despite all these harm and risks, FDA seemed to be on Monsanto’s side justifying the principle of substantial equivalence that foods that resulted from genetic modification is substantially similar to what natural food has. So, your health is on your own hands and brilliance. Do you need meat for protein? Is plant protein enough? By VLPantoja Protein is one of the most important nutrients needed by the body especially for growth and maintenance. The cells of our body has protein and it is its major component, especially in muscles. Men having lean muscles and firm body built are often said to be in protein diet. With carbohydrates and lipids, proteins help for better body sustainance and increase performance. When the former are not enough, protein acts as fuel. But that’s not all. Hair, skin and nails also have protein. The building blocks of protein called as amino acids build muscles and repair damaged tissues. In digestion, proteins are decomposed to amino acids for absorption. Sadly, not all are easily digestible for absorption. So what source of protein do we need? Protein is generally found in many food groups, but not all proteins are good for everyone. Some foods may be high in amino acids but cannot be easily digestible. Other proteins may even cause allergies like the protein in milk which can cause casein allergy. Proteins in grains, nuts and shellfish are also common causes of allergies. Although there is a wide source of protein, deficiency of this nutrient can still happen and can be very alarming. This may even lead to serious illness like mental retardation. The study of the blood type and genotype diet have showcased the need for the kind of protein by the body based on the person’s blood type. Blood type O should maintain a regular dose of meat or animal protein, while type B are lucky to get the most benefits of protein from dairy products, although a dose of animal protein, excluding chicken, should also be consumed. While Type A can benefit from chicken and other different food group sources like dairy, nuts, legumes and greens, type AB should go for a balance of meat and plant proteins. An imbalanced absorption for type AB may cause disparity in systems processes affecting primarily the brains. Sometimes, the only way to find out which is good for you is to record signs and changes that may be felt or occur after eating such food. Our body has the greatest capacity to notice any pain and adjustments and even a single bowel that doesn’t seem normal may indicate something. Protein has always been an essential nutrient in the body and being a lot knowledgeable about it can make one fitter and healthier. Since protein is present in all the cells of our body, its nutritional value to every cell should be given extra attention. The D’Adamo site has stated that a person of blood type O who goes vegetarian can easily look older than those who consume regular animal protein. He also gets grey hairs at a younger age than the animal protein consumer. The same goes with the rest of the blood types if they consume the wrong protein. There are those who complain about having too much gas when they consume beans, but there are also those who don’t feel it. Do not be mistaken of food intolerance to food allergies. Our stomach has a coating unreceptive to the acid, that is why we do not actually feel the acidity which might make us feel uncomfortable. In the process of digestion, all nutrients from the foods we intake are absorbed in the small intestines. The millions of villi lined inside the small intestines suck up the nutrients from the foods and get them absorbed into the bloodstream. That is the normal process of absorption. With the case of eating grains, the chemical bonds are indigestible giving undigested protein in return. This protein gives an uncomfortable and bloated feeling. The bonds of these gluten will only stumble inside the intestines causing the villi to get damaged, impairing nutrient absorption. When this happens, diseases like celiac disease, irritable bowel movement and many other diseases of its kind will be suffered, which will eventually lead to mal-absorption of nutrients.
