now. Click here and start streaming now.
What are you watching?
I get this question about three times a week from friends, family members or coworkers.
Somehow I am never prepared to answer. I stutter….
“Erm, I binged the new Love is Blind?”
I am embarrassed. I am ready to change the topic immediately. Lately, it seems like added
work to find good shows. Shows that create connection and conversation.
The world is such a vast sea of incredible creation how do I not know any good shows on
the top of my head?!
Netflix has a top 10 list which normally features some combination of a murder shows, a
reality show about finding love, a new season of an old show and some kind of sports
documentary.
It is easy for me to fall into the trap of the Netflix top 10 list. That is not what this post is
about.
Netflix streaming has now become an olympic sport. We all do it, but are we claiming all of
the possible points out there? For $10 a month, the Netflix streaming world is my oyster
and I have been choosing to eat day-old sushi instead of fresh fatty tuna.
There is nothing wrong with day-old sushi, I eat it all the time. My local grocery store does
a $5 sushi roll special on Wednesdays. It brings me joy. But, a small part of my brain dreams
of a freshly sliced, unique and flavorful eating experience.
My top 10 list for Netflix Streaming is the unique experience you have been craving. Here
are 10 shows that you might not have ever heard of, but are worth a binge.
#10 Extraordinary Attorney Woo
Brilliant attorney Woo Young-woo tackles challenges in the courtroom and beyond as a
newbie at a top law firm and a woman on the autism spectrum. Every episode of this show
is a warm hug that brings happy tears to my eyes.
#9 Unorthodox
Esty, a nineteen-year-old girl who is unhappy in her ultra-orthodox arranged marriage.
This show quietly throws you into a world most of us have never seen up close. It is a
heartache to watch as you leave feeling everyone is trying to do what they think is right. I
finished this series with a newfound appreciation for my life.
#8 Occupied
There is nothing dystopian about this show. Amidst a global fuel crisis, Europe has become
dependent on energy from oil-rich Norway which Russia currently occupies. On top of a
thrilling plot, this show features amazing shots of the Norwegian wilderness that makes me
want to plan my next trip there.
#7 Lupin
This French thriller revenge drama is the best way to spend a weekend afternoon. The main
character will steal your heart and maybe a few other things. This show has charm,
intelligence and a torn story about fathers and sons.
#6 Money Heist
Crime drama has been taken to a new level. On display is a diverse set of characters that all
end up in the same place at the same time doing the best they can to maintain control.
Quick spoiler: control is not maintained, havoc ensues all around.
#5 The End of the F***ing World
17-year-old classmates Alyssa and James go on a wild road trip. There is magnetic
chemistry in these two protagonists, with impeccably funny line deliveries. The entire plot
is ironic as James is on a mission to kill his partner throughout the show.
#4 Giri / Haji
Characters in this show are torn between Tokyo and London after a boss’s nephew is
assassinated in London and a Tokyo detective is hired to find him. There is an undeniable
appeal to this unfolding world which tackles the detective's personal conflict as the
assassin happens to be his brother.
#3 How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)
Is Breaking Bad one of your all time favorite shows? If you have never seen it. Stop
everything you are doing right now and start watching. But, if you have seen it then maybe
you are craving a similar show. This is a true story about a German high-schooler who
starts Europe’s biggest drug market online. The transformation from nerd to drug kingpin
is fascinating.
#2 Unbelievable
True Detective turned upside down. This is a case of a 16-year-old from Washington who
claims she has been raped in her bedroom, later rescinding her statement after fierce
questioning of the police. The difference between this show and True Detective (and really
every other crime show out there) is it is about the victims, not the abusers.
#1 Ethos
Words, words, words. That is the core of this show. It is the core of all shows, but the
dialogue in this show will draw you in with a whisper. This thoughtful drama is set in
bustling Istanbul where different characters cross paths and bare all the details of their
lives.
