Assignment 1
There is no company in the world which has been associated with that much of evil than Monsanto. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs), seeds are the hideous product of the Monsanto. Farmer will depend on Monsanto for the seed to grow as the customary way to grow crops by harvesting seeds is over. To me, there is a wide range of concerns regarding Monsanto from Health, Environment to contamination. It is highly unethical to damage the health for the sake of maximum productivity (business). There are number of reports regarding GMOs resulting allergies and diseases among humans and dairy livestock. Monsanto through its chemicals and GMOs is becoming the ultimate monopolist who is out there to make bucks. This unethical behavior depicted here by Monsanto involves "Opportunity". It is purely a business model to make money by taking advantage of insufficient food and agro-based supply. Monsanto is clearly exploiting when it says it is out there for business only, tells a lot. It is the situational opportunity, due to lack of the agro-based supply which is making it (Monsanto) a giant with no strings attached. Monsanto does not comply with any accountability whatsoever. Making money seems the only priority. To avoid the accountability Monsanto manipulates the system through bribery, lobbying and maneuvering the regulatory authorities like FDA. It is cutting the corners and exploiting the whole federal and social system by taking the advantage of the opportunity to produce more. Surprisingly, there is not a single comprehensive and independent research available to apprehend the consequences of GMOs. So it demands accountability at both intellectual and moral levels.
To me, Monsanto is being an opportunist who is concerned only with its own "money". Firstly, I think, U.S government should step into this matter immediately. The government should form a committee for the independent research on GMOs impacts. The committee should be able to assess the depth of the problem and also make recommendations. All upcoming products should be examined prior to FDA approval and injecting them into markets. The existing range of product should also be examined and if research finds those harmful, FDA should disapprove the existing stockpile as well. They should be declared as ban products and authorities should make sure to halt the further cultivation.
Secondly, the government should also help the research institutions to find new and more efficient venues to grow more. It will demolish the monopoly for good. It will also bring competition to grow or produce better and quality products. This will help to close the door for such opportunists who can manipulate the whole system for own sake. It will also aid towards the environmental protection as to perform in a competitively better and efficient way. Competition can also ensure the safety and quality at same time even at gigantic level of production.
