The Disruptive Practitioner a Danger to The Hospital’s Operation
There is a lot to look at the disruptive practitioner behavior policies. A fact that must be mentioned regarding its importance in the healthcare and the maintaining of its influence and reputation, is the way of implementing disruptive practitioner behavior policies.
Before we jump to different examples and practices, it should be explained what the disruptive practitioner behavior policies is.
This policy objective is to check the behavior of a health institution, or centers staff, against the patient. By behavior we mean the rude and offending manners towards its patients, and not only, it happens between doctors and nurses or even with other people or family of the patient, which sometimes can be fatal
It is a way of bullying, meaning shouting, intimidating, generally being aggressive and losing your manners towards patients or people attending the health center. It is understandable that this type of behavior impacts the centers reputation. Disruptive behavior it is not about offending and being rude to a patient, but also coming late to work and smelling alcohol etc.
A survey made from the Institute of Safe Medication resulted in 7% from around 2 thousand healthcare institutions staff members that were part in a medication error. Similar surveys have served in results which show that most of the medication errors made by hospitals are connected to disruptive behaviors.
For years the disruptive behaviors have been a problem nationally, since 2001 the Joint Commission has requested that Healthcare institutions should develop policies against disruptive behaviors and also how to manage a case of disruptive behavior.
After the request a survey in 2009 showed that almost 56% of the healthcare institutions were implementing policies and training methods to reduce the level of disruptive practices in the hospitals.
Anyone of the patients when facing this type of behavior against them, they will start looking for another center to attend because we all expect to be treated nicely. Losing patients because of disruptive behavior becomes known locally very fast, and it will take away you whole decorum.
The role of the disruptive practitioner behavior policy, is to prevent it from happening again, if it has happened once before. The center should state these policies very cleanly written and loudly spoken, so the concerned party will know what his next step will be in case of a similar rude manner form any of the staff member.
The main reason is to stop and prevent similar experiences to the patient, he will know at which door he should knock when a staff member losses his manner, and also put a stop to the deviant behavior since the staff should know what to expect from the policy.
Now you know why the healthcare center should have a disruptive practitioner policy stated clearly. Most of the policies are progressive, meaning that applies increasingly severe sanctions to the incidents of bad behavior.
Despite the fact that these policies exist and patients have the right to implement the required steps in case of rude behavior from the staff of the hospital, disruptive behaviors still are present in high percentage as a national problem.
