I. Introduction
About the Business
Cielo en Tieraa Island Resort is the new brand of a tranquil tropical-island destination that
introduces new level of luxury in Philippines’ Last Frontier. It was opened and served the said tropical
destination and is now conducting its major renovation. It is expected to be re-opened on the first
quarter of 2011 to continue its legendary and unexceptional service.
Cielo en Tierra Island Resort was developed as a serene village and wildlife sanctuary unto itself
– which is marked by white-sand beaches, coastal waters that glisten with endless shades of blue and
boundless opportunity. One of the resort’s unique features is the breathtaking view to the South China
Sea sunset – a perfect tranquil hideaway. The natural wonder of this island is truly enchanting and the
view from Cielo en Tierra is nothing compared to the view that anyone will get from a high rise building
anywhere in other cities in the world.
The name of the resort “Cielo en Tierra” –meaning “heaven on earth” says it all. This island has
an irresistible beauty that will hook anyone even from far away and will find themselves paying tribute
to a goddess that has long been separated but still shining and beautiful in her grandeur. The nearest
town, Linapacan, is around 15 km from the island. Linapacan is 305.9 km north of Puerto Princesa City.

II. Company Ownership
Cielo en Tierra Island Resort is under SMN Corporation, which was founded by Ms. Sharlyn May
Nas 20 years after graduating from Cavite State University –Imus Campus with the course of Bachelor of
Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
The corporation has it all –hotels, restaurants, spas and bars, everything that has to do with the
hospitality industry. After a number of years, all the hard work had paid-off; the corporation then
became a giant, reining the hospitality industry.
III. MANAGERIAL FUNCTIONS
Planning
The management always anticipates the opportunities, problems, conditions and learns to choose
among the alternative courses of action. In order to make an excellent plan, the following activities are
created:
ESTABLISHING OBJECTIVES
GOAL SETTING: The company’s goal is to become the top Island Resort in the world.
Aside from top of the line facilities and amenities that we have, another great thing that our
resort is surely proud of is a one of a kind service that we can give our guests. We will envision a new
brand of hospitality that will create a natural haven of peace, tranquility and comfort to this majestic
and magnificent tropical island destination. We will guarantee an excellent and unparalleled service
through practicing our guiding principles which are strongly bonded by our core values. Most of all we
will enable decision making at the guest contact point and we will make guest loyalty a key driver of our
business.

After a plan was set, group of activities are defined and authority relationship are created among them.
In Cielo en Tierra Island Resort, organizations are developed so that the management can
properly allocate their human resources properly in accordance to their expertise in a specific field of
the business.

The Human Resource Manager, is mainly responsible for choosing, training and development,
compensation and appraisal of subordinates. Just like in the other departments, the human resource is
not only composed of the manager, in Cielo en Tierra, the department was composed of other
subordinates that specializes in a specific field of enhancing workers ability.
Leading
In Cielo en Tierra, we ensure that leadership drives for results.
We make sure that every manager in this resort portrays the ability of issuing orders and
instructions without arousing any resentment among its subordinates.
We make sure that the leaders are able to secure willing obedience from their subordinates
without destroying their initiative and creativity. Moreover, we require each department heads
to have a sound communication system to enable exchange of ideas and information for
common understanding.
Controlling
The managements’ approach in controlling involves:
Establishing performance standards
Performance evaluation, and
Corrective action
IV. CONCLUSION
I’ve concluded that each managerial function is essential in running a certain business. If one of
those five is not performed excellently, the management won’t achieve the kind of result it expects.
