Case Study Sample 1
Preethi
Preethi, a student of class V, hails from Bangalore and stays at the school-run Home. Her mother is a
caretaker at a kindergarten school, her uncle is a driver and her grandparents run a flower shop.
Her father deserted the family while she was still unborn. But her family is very involved in the
children’s education and willing to do anything to ensure good education for them. Having studied
in the Kannada medium for one year, she along with her sister was admitted in this school after a
few unpleasant happenings in the family. Both of them had to start over from Class I so as to cope
with Tamil. Right from the beginning, Preethi was observed to be a slow learner by her class
teacher. She lacked confidence and used to be very frightened in class. It was found during the
student assessment and first follow up assessment that Preethi had problems mainly in English and
Maths but she was better off than many slow learners in her class. In short, all Preethi needed was
individual attention and motivation.
The Project has engaged with her in these areas specifically and she has responded well to the
interventions. The individual attention during tuitions and special classes, the project’s activity
based approach and constant motivation from the para-teacher and project staff have helped
Preethi fare better academically. The follow up assessments have recorded her progress in Maths,
English and Tamil. Her Annual exam marks have also shown an improvement in these three
subjects as compared to her Quarterly exam marks.
