Metadata description: Simethicone is used to alleviate symptoms of gas in the stomach and
intestines.
Introduction Sentence:
Simethicone is a nonprescription (over-the-counter) medication used to treat gas in the stomach
and intestines.
Overview:
Simethicone is a nonprescription (over-the-counter) medication used to treat gas in the stomach
and intestines. It's available in many forms, including syrup, chewable tablet, capsule, solution,
suspension, liquid filled capsule, liquid and tablet. Prior to using simethicone, it's important to let
your healthcare provider know about any other medications you may be taking to avoid any
potential drug interactions. Simethicone works by altering the surface tension of gas bubbles in
your stomach and intestines. That way, they combine into larger bubbles that can pass more
easily.
Simethicone comes in a variety of brand names, some of which include Alka-Seltzer Anti Gas,
Mylaval, Maalox Anti-Gas, Flatulex Drops, Mylanta, Major-Con, SonoRx, Colic Drops, Phazyme,
Degas, Colicon, Genasyme, Gas Aide, Mylicon, and Micon-80, Mytab Gas.
Condition(s) Treated:
•
Gas
Type of Medicine:
•
Anti-flatulence medication
Side effects:
There have not been any known side effects reported by patients using this medication.
However, if you begin to develop any side effects, contact your primary care physician to let
them know what's going on. They can help you report any possible side effects to the FDA, if
necessary.
Dosage:
Follow all instructions given by your doctor, or the instructions that came with the medication. If
you're treating yourself, which is perfectly acceptable, follow the manufacturer's directions.
For the best results, take simethicone after you eat and before you go to bed. Patients using the
chewable tablets should chew the tablets carefully before swallowing them to allow the
medication to work faster and better. Patients using the oral liquid form of simethicone should
use the dropper to measure out the proper amount before taking any.
Avoid foods that give you gas while taking simethicone and be sure to chew your food slowly
and meticulously. Do not drink carbonated, fizzy soft drinks or smoke prior to eating. This helps
reduce the amount of air you swallow. Improving your bathroom (bowel) habits and exercising
more frequently can help your condition. Be sure you're primary care physician knows if you're
on a special diet, such as a low-sugar or low-sodium diet. Many medications contain more than
just the active ingredient.
The dosage of this medication will vary from patient to patient. The information provided is
simply the average dosage information. That does not mean it will match up with your dosage. If
your dosage does not match up with the information provided here, resist the urge to change
your dosage, unless your primary care physician tells you that it's okay.
The quantity of medication you'll take will be contingent upon the power of the medication. The
quantity of dose you'll take every day, the time between each dose and how long you take
simethicone will be contingent upon the problem you're treating.
To treat gas, adults and teenagers should take 60 to 125-milligram capsules or tablets at least
four times per day, after eating and before going to bed. You should not take more than 500
milligrams in a 24-hour period. Children must have their dosages determined by their
paediatricians.
Adults and teenagers taking the oral chewable tablets should take 40 to 125 milligrams per day
after eating and before going to bed. Alternatively, it may be 150 milligrams three times daily
after eating. Never take more than 500 milligrams in a 24-hour period. Children must have their
dosages determined by their paediatricians.
Adults and teenagers taking the suspension form of simethicone should take 40 to 95 milligrams
four times daily after eating and before bed. Never take more than 500 milligrams in a 24-hour
period.
Missing a dose requires that you take the next one as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly
time for your next dose. If that's the case, skip the one you missed and resume your normal
dosing schedule. Never double up on doses to make up for a missed one.
You can mix the simethicone drops with infant formula, water or another drink.
In case of an accidental overdose, contact your local poison control centre immediately or seek
emergency medical attention.
Interactions:
Certain medications should not be combined because of the chance of a possible drug
interaction. Sometimes, two medicines are used together because your primary care physician
recommends such. In cases like these, your primary care physician will likely adjust the dosage
of one or both medications. Tell your primary care physician if you're taking any other
medications.
There are no known drug interactions associated with simethicone. However, it's important to
inform your primary care physician about any prescription, nonprescription, herbal, illegal,
nutritional, recreational or dietary drugs you're taking. Alcohol and tobacco use can also interact
with certain medications, so discuss your lifestyle and habits with your primary care physician.
Some foods can also interact with certain drugs.
Warnings:
Prior to using simethicone, talk to your primary care physician if you have any allergies to
medications or any serious medical conditions. Never take more than the recommended amount
of this medication.
Simethicone in liquid form might contain a substance called phenylalanine. If you have a
condition called phenylketonuria (PKU), this medication can cause complications. Tell your
healthcare provider if you have this medical condition, or any other condition.
Talk to your primary care physician about using antacids or other stomach medications while
you're taking simethicone. Simethicone can be found in several other combination products.
Therefore, you should not take other medications containing simethicone, as taking certain
medications simultaneously can cause an accidental overdose.
Consider keeping a list of all of the medications you're currently taking for when you visit the
pharmacy or go for a doctor's visit. This can help you easily refer to this list when discussing the
medications you're taking. It can also be helpful to keep this list with you at all times in case of
an emergency. You can even store it on your smartphone for even easier access.
Simethicone is safe for adults, children and babies, it's also usually safe for newborns. If you're
not sure if you should give it to your baby, contact your primary care doctor, or your child's
paediatrician. Simethicone is used by parents to treat infants suffering from colic and to reduce
the number of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines. However, studies have not proven
that simethicone gas drops are really effective for treatment of colic in infants.
Normally, simethicone is known to be safe for pregnant mothers because it is not absorbed by
the placenta, therefore, it cannot cause any harm to your unborn baby. Nursing mothers can
also use it, as it is generally safe for breastfeeding babies. However, you should still let your
healthcare provider know before you start taking this medication if you're pregnant or plan on
becoming pregnant, as well as if you plan to breastfeed while on this medication.
Simethicone may be used prior to having some medical or laboratory tests, like an upper
abdominal ultrasound imaging test.
Some combination products you should avoid while taking simethicone include: Mintox Plus
(containing aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone); Ri-Gel II (contains
aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone); Riopan (contains magaldrate
and simethicone); Low Sodium Plus (contains aluminum hydroxide, simethicone, and
magnesium hydroxide); Valumag Plus (contains simethicone, magnesium hydroxide, and
aluminum hydroxide); Titralac Plus (contains simethicone and Calcium Carbonate); Losospan
Plus (contains simethicone and magaldrate); Imodium Advanced (contains simethicone and
loperamide); Gen-Lanta (contains simethicone, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium
hydroxide); Rolaids Plus Gas Relief (contains simethicone, magnesium hydroxide, and calcium
carbonate); Masanti (contains simethicone, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide);
and Aldroxicon (contains simethicone, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium hydroxide), to
name a few.
Storage:
Keep this medication in a secure container away from children or pets. Keep it at room
temperature to avoid extreme moisture, heat or direct light. Do not freeze this medication and do
not keep it longer than you need it. Once you're finished with treatment, get rid of any unused or
expired medication. Ask your primary care physician or pharmacist how to properly dispose of
any expired or unused medication.
Do not store this medication in weekly pill reminders, as they can easily be opened by children
or pets, and avoid storing it in the bathroom because it provides easy access for someone else
to take your medication, whether it be a guest or someone living in your household.
Summary:
Simethicone can be a greatly beneficial drug for patients suffering from gas. Infants suffering
from colic may also benefit from this medication, as it has anti-flatulent properties that may
make it easier for babies to pass gas bubbles through their stomachs.
When taken correctly, simethicone can provide relief of the side effects of having gas, such as
bloating, fullness, and painful pressure. This medication comes in the form of tablets, chewable
tablets, liquid and capsules. It is usually taken by mouth four times per day after eating and at
bedtime. This drug is known to be safe to take for pregnant women and nursing babies, and
there are no known side effects.
