Installing Group Policy Management
Modified Script:
Hello there everyone. I am [brief intro of speaker] and today I am going to give you a walk through along the installation of Group Policy Management in Windows Server 2012, R2. First off, what exactly is Group Policy Management? SO Group Policy Management, let’s call it GPM for the sake of ease, is a hierarchical infrastructure which allows a network administrator to implement certain configurations for users. Think defining users, security controls and networking policies; all of this using Microsoft’s Active Directory. Now let’s see how to install GPM in your Active Directory. Now starting off at home screen of Active Directory, any such changes made here will be reflected off to all the connected users and so on. It is basically the centralized control station to configure user and application settings. So before diving deep into GPM, first we set it up. To make sure it isn’t already available, open the server manager, the default screen is the dashboard. Now on the upper left corner, you’ll find tools, click on it to open the drop down menu. Now here you’ll find all previously installed features. Look for GPM; Soemtimes, during the installation of ADDS, we skip on GPM installation. IF you did so, you will not find it here on the dropdown list. Though it can be installed through the server manager, which we are about to do now.
So when you open the server manager, [I can through clicking on this icon on my quick access tab below though you can find it in the start menu], the default screen is the dashboard. You can also access the dashboard tab from the list of tabs available on the left pane. So here, you will find the add role and features option. Click on it, this starts the add role and features wizard. So here are some heads up tips which I will leave on you to read. Now by clicking next we choose what kind of installation we intend to do. Here we will select the rule based or feature based installation, since GPM is the feature of ADDS and we have to only install one specific feature right now. Now click on next, so here we have server selection option. Now we have to select the destination server for the GPM. Now the available server here is tetranoodleDC.tetranoodle.com. Just to confirm, we can check whether or not this is host server. On the start menu, right click to access the pop up menu and select properties. Here you can see the host name, tetranoodle.com. So you have selected the right one here. Now closing these properties windows, and back to the wizard, click on next. So on the server installation tab, we can see that ADDS is already installed but the GPM was not as we checked from the Tools dropdown menu. So select ADDS and click on next. Now here we select the feature to be installed, scroll down on the list to find GPM and check the box. Now when you select GPM, on the right side you can see its description, So group policy management is a scriptable Microsoft management console (MMC), snap-in, providing administrative tool for managing group policy across the enterprise. Group policy management is the standard tool for managing group policy. Now click on next. Now here check on box for restart destination server automatically if required. When you check the box, you’ll get a warning message regarding restarting of destination server, click on yes. Click on next. Now you’ve specified all the details, only left is to press install and here we go. This can take a couple of minutes. So here we are, we have successfully installed the feature on our hostname. Let’s close this window.
So up here we can see a notification tab, we have a notification that GPM has successfully installed. You can open it if you wish. See. Now closing it. So just to check whether the installation went okay, you can look for GPM in tools dropdown tab now. This time you’ll find it here; scroll a bit yes here it is. Click on it to open the GPM console. This is Microsoft Management Console or MMC. Here is our forest, tetranoodle.com and our domain is tetranoodle.com as well. We have the whole structure of the domain. I can cross check it over here. Open the Active Directory users and computers. Okay so this is taking some time, let me click it one more time. Okay so it opened. Oh it opened twice, let me close the other window. And let us compare now. So we have our forest, tetranoodle.com, (switches window), tetranoodle.com. WE have Domain Controllers, Tetra 1, Tetra 2. So all are same now and showing over here in our GPM control console. So if you want to add any GP object, it will be visible here in the overview and take effect respectively. So this is how you install GPM on Windows Server 2012, R2.
