Managing Food Intake and Physical Fitness for Drivers
As mentioned before, it is important that your driver, especially the large goods vehicles (LGVs) driver, should be physically fit at all times for efficient performance of his job functions. Stress should also be checked as this could affect his overall health and would have an adverse effect on his job.
One key aspect that the driver should take into consideration is his diet. As they say, a hungry worker would result into an unhappy worker because he could not perform his work efficiently since he would be distracted by the feeling of hunger. Not even someone who would have feasted on too much food would be considered healthy, either. In this case, it is important that:
1. The driver should have the proper amount of nutritional intake for proper nourishment; and
2. Meals and snacks should be taken by the driver during appropriate beaks (full meals during the longest break and snacks on short breaks after hours of driving).
It is his responsibility to ensure that a healthy and balanced diet the best way to get enough nutrients. An assortment of foods is recommended to meet this goal since research shows that all these are not present in a single serving of food, whatever the occasion. These nutrients should be free of sweets and fats which may impair his overall health when taken in amounts more than the desired intake, and these may result into him being accident-prone.
He should also get the right amount of liquid intake, preferably water, which should sustain him for the day and to avoid the effects of dehydration, which has disastrous consequences especially with focus and attention.
The driver should also be exposed to physical activity like warm-ups, some jumps, and other related body exercises, so as to keep the body in harmony and shape and to minimise his susceptibility to mishaps.
