Moving House: New Place & New People
A new city. New people. New adventures.
As human beings, we need a sense of community and a feeling that we belong. In big cities,
it can be difficult to feel like you belong anywhere. I love going out and meeting new people
but joining a club can be daunting. There is always the fear that you will not be good enough.
If, like me, you feel like there is life outside of your apartment and want to soak up as much as
possible, here are a couple of ideas:
Sports Clubs
Ever wanted to take up running? Feel like you missed your chance at becoming a deadly full
forward? Why not join your local sports club? Most towns in Ireland will have either a GAA
club or football club that you can join for a small fee. You can decide whether to play matches
or just go training. Other towns have other activities like rowing or hockey, but whatever
sport takes your fancy, there is bound to be one that you can join.
Gardening
If you are less active or you are looking to relax, gardening is a great way to pass the time. You
don't need to have a big back garden to garden. Luscious blooms can sprout from even the
smallest pots on a balcony. This is a relaxing way to spend a half hour of your day. If you want
to become more of a Monty Don, see if there are allotments in y
our local area. For a fee, you
can rent a plot to grow anything from grow giant vegetables to show stopping flowers. Who
knows? It may even lead to a design garden in Bloom.
Volunteer
Volunteering is one of the most rewarding activities. While it is not for everyone, volunteering
positions do not always have to be one to one. Whether you become a Scout leader or the

secretary of a local club, volunteering is great way of connecting with your new community.
It also makes you feel good while making new friends. Volunteering Ireland connects
volunteers with communities and is a great place to find new volunteering opportunities.
Nature Trails
Good walking boots on? Check.
Thermal underpants on? Check.
Is your hat pulled over your ears? Check.
Well then you’re all ready for one of Ireland’s 938 walking trails. Whether you decide to walk,
run, bike or paddle your way, there are plenty of spots to decide from. I rishtrails.ie have a
handy map where you can find your perfect trail in a matter of minutes.
Notice Boards
Do not underestimate the power of your local noticeboard! This unorganised mess can host
your communities best secrets and some diamonds in the rough. From dog walkers to yoga
classes, your next community based activity could be just around the corner, in the shop, on
a notice board, behind the signs saying “Babysitter Wanted”.
Start Your Own Club
If none of these take your fancy, why not set something up your self? Have a passion for
crochet and knitting? Why not set up a crochet group in your local café or pub? Love
reading? Set up a book club in your local community centre. If the area you live in doesn’t
have what you want, why not set it up yourself?
Print some flyers, put them on your local notice board and get local businesses involved. Pop
up Gaeltacht is a perfect example of how you don't need to be sporty or crafty to have a great
time.
