Tune Out Tinnitus with Psychotherapy
Do you hear a persistent buzzing or ringing sound that you know is not emanating from an external source? If yes, then you’ve probably got tinnitus, and you’re not alone. Livescience reports that according to a study, up to 25.3% of Americans are suffering from this condition.
People exposed to high levels of noise at work are more susceptible to the condition. This is because the high decibels impact one’s hearing abilities. Doctors hypothesize that when you lose the ability to hear sounds in a particular frequency range, the brain compensates by introducing these ghost sounds.
Normally, people choose to ignore or live with episodes of tinnitus. They get used to the high-pitched sounds. However, chronic tinnitus is a different story. It affects your sleep, cognitive abilities, and concentration. It has a detrimental effect on the quality of your life.
Although, tinnitus does not generally lead to medical complications, it is associated with loss of hearing. And, if the subject is already suffering from anxiety disorders or depression, then tinnitus can worsen these conditions. It is a psychologically disturbing phenomenon.
Current treatment options for tinnitus include medication and hearing aids. The latter are used to produce white noise to cancel the constant humming in the ears. The symptoms of tinnitus are most keenly felt at bedtime, in the quiet of the night. White noise machines that can play the sounds of waterfalls or soothing music allow subjects to take their minds off the constant buzzing in their ears and go to sleep.
NPR.org states that psychotherapy has emerged as a viable alternative for those who wish to avoid medication and feel uncomfortable wearing hearing aids. Talk therapy, a form of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), aims to help people combat the condition. This it achieves by guiding and encouraging people to change their thought patterns and get in a frame of mind that equips them to respond to the condition in a positive manner.
CBT is particularly recommended for those who suffer from chronic tinnitus and harbor negative or destructive thoughts. Episodes of tinnitus can vary in severity. Over time, people begin to take a negative and defensive approach to dealing with the condition. On particularly bad days, it becomes easier to stay at home and avoid activities than put up with the irritation of the unceasing noise. CBT challenges this mindset. Trained mental health therapists coax and guide subjects to resume activities that they’ve given up in despair. CBT is based on the premise 'Pain in life is inevitable, but suffering is optional.'
This form of psychotherapy also uses meditative techniques to help people gain more control over their senses and thought processes.
Studies have shown that psychotherapy for tinnitus is effective in helping people combat the harmful psychological effects associated with chronic tinnitus.

What are the benefits of Cooking with Grapeseed Oil?
The health benefits of grapes are well known. But, do you know that the seed of this fruit, grapeseed, yields oil that can be used for cooking and that its use as a cooking medium is beneficial for our health? This oil is rich in health-boosting antioxidants and can be used for salad dressings and marinades.
Grapeseed oil is manufactured by cold pressing grape seeds. The oil, thus released, contains vitamins, proteins, minerals, fats, and other nutrients. Since grapeseed oil does not have any taste, it can be used in place of other oils such as peanut oil and vegetable oil. Research suggests that up to seven teaspoons a day is good for the body.
For a healthy heart
According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, grapeseed helps regulate blood pressure and pulse rate. It is good for those suffering from hypertension. Preliminary studies have revealed that consuming this oil does not increase lipid levels in blood. Grapeseed oil does not contain cholesterol.
Valuable Antioxidants
Apart from minerals like zinc, potassium, copper, and calcium, grapeseed oil also contains valuable antioxidants. These are present in the compound proanthocyanidin. These antioxidants are many times more effective than vitamin C and vitamin E. They protect the body from oxidative stress and contribute to our health. Studies suggest that grapeseed oil can lower oxidized LDL levels and contribute to a healthy heart.
Benefits in Cooking
Grapeseed oil has a high smoke point, which means it does not burn or decompose at high heat. This makes it an ideal cooking medium for dishes that are cooked on a high flame. Its high smoke point of approximately 420 F makes it a better alternative to olive and sesame oil. The oil is light on the palette and has a nutty flavor that appeals to all.
Anticancer Properties
While it antioxidant properties make grapeseed oil a potent cancer inhibitor, research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center has revealed that this oil may be particularly effective against colorectal cancer. Grapeseed oil could find use in inhibiting the growth of colorectal tumor cells without the side effects that accompany chemotherapy.
Conclusion
Grapeseed oil offers a plethora of health benefits and is a great choice for health conscious individuals. Cold pressed organic grapeseed oil, which is free from preservatives, is the best alternative. Naturally present preservatives and antioxidants in the oil ensure that it can be stored for long and you can reuse the oil without any worries.
Will the Real Olive Oil Stand Up to the Test?
We buy our cooking and salad oils in good faith that the bottles and cans contain what the labels claim they do. However, there is substantial fraud taking place in the manufacture and sale of extra virgin olive oil. Over the past two decades, the olive oil producing industry has been rocked by several scandals and revelations of how substandard olive oil is being sold as extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is adulterated with nut oils and seed oils. Often, oils that do not have the attributes necessary for being graded as extra virgin are sold as such. Such oils are deficient in flavor and aroma.
In fact, in March 2014, a company in the U.S had to face a class action suit for selling olive pomace extract as pure olive oil. The quality of olive oil available in the U.S has seen a sharp downward spiral over the past few years. Given the fact that technology has enabled access to high quality extra virgin olive oil, adulteration in this day and age is ironic. However, it can be explained by the tremendous increase in the demand for extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil traders and bottlers in Spain, Portugal, and Italy are producing low-grade olive oils, which find their way to markets in the EU and North America, where they are sold as pure or extra virgin olive oil.
A study in California, conducted in 2010, which aimed at testing whether oils sold as extra virgin actually fulfilled the criteria for being labeled so, found that nearly 70% of the oils imported into America did not meet the standards required to be marked as “extra virgin olive oil”.
Another study conducted in 2012 by UC Davis Olive Center found that of 21 olive oils brands sampled, only one possessed attributes to clear the USDA standards of chemical analysis. These brands were being sold to restaurants.
Adulterated or poor quality olive oil invariably fails sensory analyses. It cannot deliver the aroma, flavor and appearance that extra virgin olive oil can. You can recognize extra virgin olive oil by its chemical composition. Acidity in extra virgin olive oil does not exceed 0.8 grams per 100 grams. It is obtained through a purely mechanical process without the use of any solvents and at temperatures under 86°F. Extra virgin olive oil is free from defects such a smell akin to sweaty garments or a mildew-like aroma.
The highest quality olive oil is characterized by a fruity flavor, pleasantly bitter taste, and a pungency that can be felt in the throat.
Health Benefits of Olive Oil
Greek myths tell us about how goddess Athena gifted the olive tree to humanity. Given the numerous health benefits of olive oil, one is inclined to believe that this tree indeed descended from the heavens. Let us look at the numerous health benefits of this golden liquid. The most interesting thing about olive oil is that every day research throws up new benefits and corroborates already known ones.
Is it a mere coincidence that cultures with impressively long life spans are traditional users of olive oil?
Research suggests that cancer, the scourge of our times, can be kept at bay by regular consumption of olive oil. Oleocanthal, a powerful phytonutrient found in olive oil, has anti-inflammatory properties and these can help in mitigating the risk of cancer.
Monounsaturated fats found in olive oil are effective barriers against type 2 diabetes and accompanying conditions. In fact, research has shown that for combating type 2 diabetes, a diet that includes olive oil is one and half times more effective than a low fat diet.
Neurologists in France have suggested that senior citizens who regularly consume olive oil can stave off strokes. This suggestion was based on a study that profiled more than 7,000 Frenchmen over the age of 65 and found that none of them had ever suffered a stroke. Subjects of the study invariably used olive oil for cooking and salad dressings. Regardless of one’s physical activities, diet, and other risk factors, the simple fact that one uses olive oil is enough to bring down the risk of strokes. Olive oil keeps the arteries healthy and prevents them from getting clogged, thereby further decreasing the risk of strokes as well as hypertension.
Olive oil is a potent weapon against osteoporosis, a condition characterized by loss in bone mass. It increases the chances of fractures, especially in the elderly and with life-threatening consequences. Olive oil consumption helps build bone mass. This property also makes it a valuable asset in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Olive oil, according to research conducted in Spain, benefits more than just our physical health. It can also help us maintain mental health. This research has far-reaching implications on the extent of health benefits conferred by olive oil. A decline in mental faculties associated with age and conditions such as clinical depressions can be avoided by consuming this oil. The polyunsaturated fatty acids found in olive oil can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related mental conditions. This research has indicated that there is a diet-related link to incidents of strokes and depression.
Antioxidants found in olive oil are being studied to find out if they can help in protecting against malignant melanoma. A Mediterranean diet, which along with other components that benefit the skin, also includes olive oil, could be effective in keeping skin cancer at bay.
Researchers are encouraged by the fact that only three out of 100,000 people in Mediterranean regions contract skin cancer. This is in stark contrast to the number of people in an equally sunny place, Australia, where one in every 20,000 individuals develops some form of this malignancy. The difference seems to be in the diet. Oleic acid and antioxidants present in olive oil bring down the risk of breast cancer.
The Mediterranean diet, of which olive oil is an integral part, has been found to offer protection from metabolic syndrome. This syndrome combines deadly conditions such as abdominal obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and raised blood sugar. It is a lifestyle related syndrome that gradually hurts our metabolism till we fall prey to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, etc. Olive oil, along with legumes, greens, fish, and low-fat milk can help us ward off this debilitating syndrome.
The health benefits of olive oil are many. Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, also contributes to the taste of food. It is a popular salad dressing. You should consider making it a part of your daily diet.
The new study found that a Mediterranean-style diet -- which includes olive oil, daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, and low-fat dairy products, weekly consumption of fish, poultry, legumes, and a relatively low consumption of red meat -- can reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome. EXPLAINING WHY VIRGIN OLIVE OIL PROTECTS AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in Western countries. While a diet rich in fats is directly related to a higher incidence of cancer, some types of fats can actually play a protective role against the development of these tumors. Such is the case of virgin olive oil which is rich in oleic acid, a mono-unsaturated fatty acid, and contains several bioactive compounds such as antioxidants.
A moderate and regular intake of virgin olive oil, characteristic of the Mediterranean diet, is associated with a low incidences of specific types of cancer, including breast cancer, as well as with having a protective role against coronary diseases and other health problems.
OLIVE OIL CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Numerous studies, including one recently published in the journal Chemical Neuroscience, showed that the oleocanthal in extra virgin olive oil has the potential to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and the cognitive decline that comes with aging.
Olive oil polyphenols are known to be powerful antioxidants which may help to reverse oxidative damage that occurs in the aging process.

IVC Filter Lawsuits
Companies manufacturing IVC filters are facing legal claims from recipients because of faulty instrument design and failure to apprise patients of the risks associated with the device. Inferior Vena Cava filters (IVC filters) are designed to trap blood clots before these travel to the lungs. Poorly manufactured filters have resulted in punctured blood vessels, fragments, and displacements. These have led to serious complications.
The IVCs are implanted in the veins of subjects who cannot take anticoagulants and need alternative treatment to prevent blood clots. IVCs trap the blood clots and after a period these clots disappear.
In 2010, the FDA issued a notice stating that retrievable filters come with the risk of filter fracture, device migration, and a chance of organs being punctured. The agency recommended that these filters should be removed as soon as the risk of clots is mitigated. In 2014, FDA released an updated communication recommending that the filters be removed between the 29th and 54th day.
Since then a number of lawsuits have been filed claiming injury and death from IVC filters. The lawsuits allege failure to issue timely warnings, defects in the design of the filters, manufacturing defects, and lapses in warranty.
Adverse and life-threatening side effects of retrievable IVC filters include perforations, device migrations, filter fractures, and pulmonary embolisms.
If you or a family member has experienced complications arising from IVC filters, then you may eligible for compensation.
A study carried out in 2013 and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that of 680 patients who had retrievable IVC filters inserted only 58 could have the filters removed. Some of the reasons why attempts at removing the filters were unsuccessful include embedded devices, filters puncturing blood vessels, filters displaced, and presence of clots inside the filter.
Two companies C.R Bard and Cook Medical are facing the brunt of the lawsuits because of their devices in the market. These devices include the Bard Recovery, Bard G2, Bard G2 Express, Cook Gunther Tulip, and Cook Celect.
Pradaxa Lawsuits
The number of people who have complained of serious bleeding issues after taking the anticoagulant Pradaxa (dabigatran) runs in thousands. Hundreds of people have lost their lives.
This anticoagulant has been linked to internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhage, bleeding kidneys, and death. The drug, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. Since then, doctors have prescribed Pradaxa to millions of patients.
In 2011, Pradaxa use led to the deaths of more than 540 patients. A multidistrict litigation (MDL) was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. In 2014, Boehringer Ingelheim agreed to pay more than $650 million to settle 4,000 lawsuits.
Lawsuits filed over injuries and deaths claimed that the company aggressively marketed the drug and did not inform about the potential risks and chances of developing life-threatening bleeds.
People who filed Pradaxa lawsuits did so to recover hospital expenses, loss of income, and also cost of funerals. Many litigants filed cases only because they did not want others to go through the trauma they went through. Boehringer Ingelheim made Pradaxa available without providing an antidote for complications that may occur. This is in stark contrast to warfarin. Doctors can reverse internal hemorrhaging caused by Warfarin. Moreover, this drug was presented as being superior to warfarin because it ostensibly did not require frequent blood monitoring. In hindsight, it appears that blood monitoring would have prevented many of the injuries and fatalities that are associated with Pradaxa.
All blood thinners come with the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding; however, the risk is higher with Pradaxa and this was not adequately reflected on its warning label. In fact, within the first three months of its availability, the drug was associated with no less than 307 cases of internal bleeding. In the first year of its use by the general public, Pradaxa was associated with more than 260 fatalities.
Critics of the drug manufacturer have alleged that the clinical trials for Pradaxa were not held in the right manner. There is a growing demand for Pradaxa recall to prevent further injuries and deaths.
If you have suffered problems because of Pradaxa, you should check your eligibility to pursue a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The Law Offices of Alex R. Hernandez Jr. can help those who have suffered because of Pradaxa complications. Our team of lawyers has the experience in litigating claims and we can help you get compensation for medical expenses, mental trauma, loss of life, lifestyle changes, and pain and suffering.
Talc Lawsuits
The link between talcum powders and ovarian cancer has been known for more than 40 years. The condition occurs when talcum powder is applied to the genital area or on sanitary napkins. Two popular brands of talcum powder include Johnson’s Baby Powder by Johnson & Johnson and Shower to Shower by Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
Talc consists of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. It has been used for thousands of years for absorbing moisture and keeping the skin dry. Modern society uses talcum powder as a deodorant and in baby products to reduce diaper rash.
The aforementioned application of talcum powder by women comes with the risk of the powder entering the ovaries via the vagina and leading to ovarian cancer. The International Journal of Gynecological Cancer has stated that even a once-per-week application of talc on female genitalia can increase the risk of ovarian cancer by up to 60%. The Attributable Risk is 29%, which means that non-use of talc can save more than one out of four women from getting this disease. According to one estimate, as many as 10,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer because of talcum powder use.
It increases the risk of respiratory conditions in infants. These conditions include shallow breathing, wheezing, and even acute lung irritation. Long-term use can lead to asthma in kids.
It is worth noting that talc has a chemical structure similar to that of asbestos, which is a known carcinogen. Like asbestos, talc is a silicate mineral and irritates the lungs upon inhalation. Irritation leads to inflammation, and chronic inflammation can give rise to malignant tumors.
As of now, no talcum powders have been taken off the shelf because of an association with ovarian cancer. However, talc-based products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
In February 2016, in a landmark judgment, a court in Missouri awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who lost her life to ovarian cancer resulting from long use of Johnson’s Baby Powder.
If you have developed ovarian cancer and you believe that there is a link between your condition and talcum powder use, then the Law Offices of Alex R. Hernandez can help you win just compensation.

Mesothelioma treatment is not cheap. The expenses can mount very fast. This is the reason why you really need the services of a lawyer who offers you a good chance of getting compensation. On your part, you must save your medical records and financial data and make these available to your lawyer.
Constant exposure to asbestos, which can lead to mesothelioma, is preventable. Depending upon the particulars of your case, we can advise you on whether to file a case or opt for a settlement. In the case of the latter option, you could get compensated without ever visiting a court or getting involved in legal issues. Bankrupt asbestos companies have pooled nearly $40 billion in trust funds to compensate mesothelioma patients.
Our experience in handling mesothelioma cases ensures that we can help you pinpoint the reasons for your condition. We understand what you’re going through and we will handle the entire process and take your help only where necessary. You can rest assured that we will leave no stone unturned to gather proof, interview witnesses, and ensuring that we have all the right records to present a strong case.
It is advisable to speak to a lawyer as soon as you learn about the diagnosis. Leaving it for later may deprive you of the chance to claim compensation. The time window during which you can file a claim varies from state to state. The earlier you take the legal route, the better are your chances of being compensated.
Risperdal Lawsuits
The antipsychotic drug Risperdal has been linked to young boys developing breast tissue – a condition known as gynecomastia. The drug has been used to treat behavior disorders related to autism and schizophrenia. Risperdal was approved by the FDA in 1993. It is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.
Gynecomastia is painful, requires surgery, and leads to severe psychological trauma for the subject. Risperdal is also linked with galactorrehea, a condition characterized by premature development of breast tissue and production of breast milk in girls that have not yet reached child-bearing age.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals and its parent company, Johnson and Johnson, are facing legal action for off label marketing, false labeling, and kickbacks. The companies failed to provide sufficient warning to patients that using this drug comes with the risk of gynecomastia. According to the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, adolescents partaking this drug were four times more likely to suffer from gynecomastia.
The drug was also prescribed to children, even though it was not approved by the FDA for use by children. J&J and Janssen Pharmaceuticals are paying $2.2 billion to settle civil and criminal liability cases related to Risperdal.
If you or your loved one have suffered from gynecomastia then you need a Risperdal complications lawyer who is well versed in product liability law. The Law Offices of Alex R. Hernandez can help you understand the chances of you winning a claim amount and the best way to approach the case. Each case varies according to the facts that influence it. These include the extent of the condition, the nature of the effect the medication has on the individual, present and future complications from taking Risperdal, cost of medication, and loss of income.
Product liability claims are among the more complicated ones, and you should hire a law firm with a successful record of accomplishment in handling such cases.
