LABORATORY SAFETY SOP (freedom clinic and laboratory)
SCOPE: This SOP applies to all the staff of the freedom clinic and laboratory.
PURPOSE:
1. To ensure the safety of personnel working within the lab.
2. To prevent the escalation of incidents.
3. To protect laboratory equipment and the surrounding environments.
STAKEHOLDERS: lab scientist, chemist, pharmacist, store keeper, lab cleaner.
TOOLS: Emergency eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers, emergency alarm systems, personal protective equipment, emergency contact numbers, emergency alarm systems.

Cleans the whole lab and the lab environment
Wash and dries the lab equipment.
Arranges the lab and make sure everything is in order.
PROCEDURE:
1. All safety equipment is present in the lab and must be maintained to ensure safety in the laboratory.
2. Ensure all the emergency equipment is inspected and maintained regularly.
3. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in the lab.
4. PPE includes lab coats, safety googles, gloves and any specialized equipment required for specific experiments.
5. Familiarize all laboratory personnel with the location and proper use of emergency equipment’s such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and first aid kits.
6. In case of a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm, evacuate the lab immediately and use the appropriate fire extinguisher.
7. Incase of a chemical spill, alert the laboratory personnel nearby then use the spill control materials and report the spill to the laboratory supervisor.
8. In case of a medical emergency, call emergency medical service, administer first aid if trained to do so or provide assistant to injured the personnel.
9. If an evacuation is necessary, remain calm and do not use the elevators, exit the laboratory immediately using the designated excavation route.
10. Keep communication lines open during the emergency.
11. After the emergency is resolved, cooperate with emergency responders and follow any additional information’s, review the emergency response and identify areas of improvement.
12. Report the incident to the laboratory supervisor for documentation and analysis.
13. Ensure that all laboratory personnel are trained in these emergency protocols and shown how to use the safety tools.
