ETIQUETTES AND CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS
1. Language Etiquette:
●
●
Basic French Phrases: While many French people, especially in Paris, speak English, it’s appreciated if you know a few
basic French phrases. Simple greetings like “Bonjour” (Hello), “Merci” (Thank you), and “S’il vous plaît” (Please) can go a
long way in showing respect and courtesy.
Politeness: The French place a high value on politeness and formal greetings. Always start with “Bonjour” when entering
shops, restaurants, or when initiating a conversation, and use “Bonsoir” in the evening. Address people with “Monsieur” or
“Madame” unless invited to use their first name.
2. Dining Etiquette:
●
●
Meal Times: Lunch and dinner are significant social occasions. Lunch usually starts around noon and dinner after 7:30
PM. It’s common to have multiple courses, and meals are often leisurely affairs.
Restaurant Etiquette: When dining out, it’s polite to wait to be seated and to say “Bonjour” to the staff. In restaurants, it’s
customary to keep your hands on the table (but not your elbows). The French appreciate quiet and calm dining
atmospheres, so keeping your voice low is advised.
3. Dress Code
●
●
Fashion: The French are known for their sense of style and often dress more formally than in some other countries. In
cities like Paris, people tend to dress smartly, even for casual outings. Avoid overly casual attire like gym wear in
non-sporting settings.
Cultural Sensitivity: When visiting religious sites or attending formal events, dress modestly and respectfully. This
generally means covering shoulders and avoiding overly casual or revealing clothing.
ETIQUETTES AND CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS
4. Tipping
●
Service Charges: In France, a service charge is often included in your bill at restaurants, so tipping is not
mandatory. However, leaving a small amount of change or rounding up the bill is a nice gesture and appreciated by
staff.
5. Social Interaction
●
●
Personal Space: The French value personal space but are comfortable with close conversation, especially among
friends. Avoid interrupting during conversations and be attentive when someone is speaking.
Conversations: Be aware of the topics you choose to discuss. While the French enjoy discussing a range of
topics, political or controversial subjects might be best avoided with new acquaintances unless they are brought
up.
6. Public Behavior
●
●
Noise Levels: The French generally prefer a more subdued and polite demeanor in public spaces. Avoid loud
conversations or behavior that could be considered disruptive.
Queuing: Wait your turn patiently in lines or queues. Cutting in or pushing ahead is considered rude.
