IS A WHIPPET RIGHT FOR ME?
Introduction
The whippet dog breed has always been known as a hunter’s best friend. This breed of dog was used to chase after rabbits and other small animals. However, in the present world, whippets are used in rally, flyball, agility, lure coursing, and obedience. Also, whippets serve as an excellent therapeutic dog, plus you can trust these breeds of dogs to obey your every instruction. Overall, whippets are a very loving breed of dogs, so they are suitable for companionship.
Though whippets are purebred, some of them might eventually find themselves in a shelter care or rescues. However, you can adopt this breed of dogs if you feel they are for you.
The friendly nature of the whippet's breed is highly attractive, and I love the stylishness that comes with their body shape. All these features combined make them a lovely family companion and be quite a good actor in the ring show. If you want to use them as pets, you will most enjoy every bit of time spent together with these creatures. The fascinating thing about these dogs' breeds is the high amount of energy that is readily deposited into their body by mother nature. Therefore, they always require many exercises to burn the excess amount of energy in their body. Whippets do not like being left home alone for a very long period.
Whippets are not much of a watchdog because of their slow reaction to barking; they even rarely bark at strangers. However, if you want a loving and compassionate pet for the whole family, whippets will immediately fill up that space for you. Therefore, I would strongly advise that whippets are right for just anyone who loves dogs as pets.
ARE YOU READY FOR A WHIPPET?
A question like this often seems personal to me when people ask me this question. However, before I answer this question, I will like to share some exciting facts about whippets.
There are quite a lot of facts that make anyone ready to own a whippet. I will share some of these facts then I would answer this question.
Adaptability
Whippets have a high adaptive feature that makes them adapt quickly to any environment they find themselves. These dogs' breeds can soon become friends with anyone, which is why I rarely see them back even at strangers. They are the type of animals that will sense a friendly gesture from afar and immediately reciprocate it.
Whatever apartment these sets of animals find themselves, they can live through it without having any form of challenges. Also, a novice can quickly learn how to manage a whippet's temperament, plus they do not stress humans for any reason. They can become unbearable for me when they begin to play around while trying to exhaust the high amount of energy they have. Apart from moments like this, you and your whippets can easily have a good time.
Sensitivity
Whippets are unique animals, and I tell you for free that they are one of the most sensitive breeds of dogs available in the world. They are not the types of dogs that rely on their sense of smell but rather their sight. They are generally referred to as sighthounds dogs because when you choose to use them for hunting, they would rather bank on the effectiveness of their view. However, this does not mean they don't use their sense of smelling at all. They do have a prominent nose, and this helps to contribute to their reasonably developed sense of smell.
Weather
Whippets are not friends with cold weather, which means you will have to provide a warm shelter. Naturally, they do have a high tolerance for a tropical environment because it makes them function properly.
Friendliness
I say to you that whippets are the friendliest breeds of dogs you can ever own. They tolerate kids, do not bark at strangers, tolerate other dogs, and are all-around family dogs.
Therefore, having listed all of this, I am sure you already know the question bugging your mind about being ready to own a whippet. All the above feature makes me prepared to hold a whippet, why not you?

I must tell you that whippets were initially trained to be a hunting dog in England. Therefore, this breed of dogs has developed into an energetic, playful, and athletic dogs. You can see that whippets are used for races and series of games, all thanks to the high energy deposit in their body.
Back to the question, whippets may seem to have low energy drive when indoor, but they require lots of exercise. They need to stretch their legs and sometimes go for a run because they have a strong prey drive.
You can lead whippets out for an exercise in an enclosed environment or guide them through the training. According to the kennel club, the recommended amount of time to exercise your whippet is a minimum of one hour per day.
For clarity, whippet puppies require about 5 minutes of light exercise twice a day. The exercise timing can get doubled as the dog begin to grow. A three-month-old whippet needs about fifteen minutes of exercise twice a day. The full-grown adult whippets can take up to 60 minutes of exercise per day and have constant opportunity to run.
HOW MUCH TRAINING DO WHIPPETS NEED?
Whippets are a brilliant set of animals, and they are pretty easy to train. Puppies are always very easy to prepare, especially when you crate-teach them. Therefore, with all of these facts, I can assure you that whippets do not need so much practice by following the basic rules of training. This is basically because of their highly obedient nature, and the high intelligence of the animal.
Finally, I will recommend you use clicker training for your whippets because of their high sensitivity. This type of training is what I recommend, especially when you want to teach basic obedience training like stand, sit, come, catch, etc.
CAN WHIPPETS BE LEFT ALONE DURING THE DAY?
Whippets do not like to be alone for long; this can sometimes make them feel agitated. Whippets want to be around you always, and this is because of their loving nature. You can term a whippet as that of a wife who likes to be around her husband. Whippets want to spend every time with you. They will touch you while you are asleep just to feel close to you.
Whippets can’t be left alone because they are easily bored and lonely. Additionally, their lack of fur and fat makes it difficult for them to function in a cold environment. Without the sight of families around, whippets are at risk of suffering from separation anxiety, making them destructive.
DO WHIPPETS NEED A LARGE GARDEN?
Whippets are the type of animals with lots of energy, and they require everyday exercise and a chance to run. Running helps them to stretch their legs, and also help them to remain sharp. Therefore, whippets do need a chance to run daily; therefore, they require a large garden with a fence all around. The garden should be at least 100 ‘long for your whippet to get a good run. However, some owners may not have that type of garden, so I will advise you to go to a tennis court. However, the most important thing is for the yard to be fenced all around.
For as much as whippets are friendly animals, they can turn destructive if they do not have their exercise needs met. When you allow them to run and exercise, they are the most friendly, quiet, and calm set of dogs alive.
Finally, my advice is to get you a garden that will give your whippet a running chance.

Whippets are good animals, with an excellent knack for obedience. They also have a high adaptive feature, making them one of the most exciting animals to have as a pet. However, living in a small house is not going to be a problem for a whippet. Whippets can stay calmly in a small yard or small homes without having any problem. It's essential that they are not left alone, and are given a chance to exercise.
Your whippet can become a troublesome dog when you isolate them from family or do not have a chance to stretch their legs.
ARE WHIPPETS CLEAN DOGS?
One of the reasons I like this breed of dog is the tidiness and immaculate way of living. I fancy when an animal knows its side of the house and knows just when to keep things tidy. Whippets are generally clean animals, they are neat, and they do not like dirt. Some whippets will not tolerate the simplest of stain or dirt, that is how unique these animals are wired.
Whippets have a short beautiful coat which is pretty easy to clean or brush. Dirt can be brushed off the jacket when there is a need for it. Whippets are called average shedder, which makes them even more attractive to own as a pet. They do not have many furs, so they rarely get your home dirty from shedding of hairs. Overall, you will enjoy living with a whippet with no complaints about dirt.

Adopting a whippet is much more advisable and comes at a lower cost than going all out to buy one for yourself. You can quickly take a whippet from a breeder for as little as three hundred dollars. Adopting one will allow you to save much more money for the total care of the dog. However, whippets are extremely expensive when you opt to buy them from breeders.
