Wimbledon
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is widely thought to be the most prestigious of all tennis events. It has been held at the All England Club in London since 1877, and is the only one of the four Grand Slams to still be played on the original surface of grass. All of the other major tournaments have moved to hard court surfaces. Centre court was fitted with a retractable roof in 2009, due to the tournament frequently being delayed by rain. The roof was installed after much debate, with some people claiming it went against the traditions that strongly define Wimbledon. However, it has reduced delays in the tournament, and allows play to continue until later in the day, as it is fitted with floodlights.
Placing bets on Wimbledon winners can now be done online at BeRivals.com. Join in with one of the existing pools, or set up your own to bet against your friends. Setting up your own pool means you can choose to bet on any aspect of the tournament, rather than just the overall winners. For example, you might choose to place bets on which highly ranked player will be eliminated on the No.2 court, otherwise known as the “Graveyard of Champions”, because of the number of previous winners and highly ranked players who have lost matches on the court. Wild card entries also add excitement to the tournament, so you may want to bet on how far these players will progress.
In 2012, Britain’s Andy Murray made it to the final of Wimbledon for the first time, being the first British player to do this since 1938. He eventually lost to Roger Federer in four sets, this being the third time the pair have met each other in the final of a Grand Slam this year. In the women’s tournament, Serena Williams achieved her fifth Wimbledon title in 2012, after her older sister, Venus, was knocked out in the first round.
