Champions League
The UEFA Champions League has taken place annually since 1955, between the top football clubs in Europe. It is a prestigious tournament that draws huge viewing numbers, with the final attracting over 300 million worldwide viewers. In 2009, the viewing numbers for the Champions League surpassed the number of people watching the Superbowl for the first time ever.
The present format of the competition, consisting of teams being split into groups, with two teams from each group progressing to the next stage, has been used since 1992.
Currently, thirty two teams from around Europe enter the Champions League, and bets can be placed on which teams will qualify for entry into the tournament. Once the tournament has begun, you can use BeRivals to place your bets on the match outcomes, goal scorers, yellow and red cards awarded, or anything else you can think of. Enter an existing pool for a chance to win up to £250,000 a week, or set up your own pool and share in the revenues.
The current holders of the Champions League trophy are Chelsea, but the most successful team in the history of the competition are Real Madrid, with nine wins throughout the history of the Champions League. However, no team has been able to hold the title for two consecutive years since the change to the present format. Milan was the last team to manage this feat, winning in both 1989 and 1990.
Normally, the top four teams in a nation’s football league qualify for entry to the Champions League, but a special dispensation was made in 2005 for Liverpool, who won the previous year’s Champions League, but did not rank high enough in the Premier League to qualify. After this, the rules were changed to allow an automatic entry to the reigning champions, enabling them to try to defend their title.
