Franchise and Xenophobic put side by side
We all know the major news making headlines currently in Africa and in the world at large: South African citizens (Most to a large extent) are kicking against the continuous stay of their fellow black Africans in South Africa. They have resorted to attacking these immigrants physically, trying to hurt them and their businesses through looting and burning. It has gotten to an extent where African countries affected are fighting back but internally and externally, resulting in reprisal attacks on businesses with South African ownership. What we need to know about some of these actions being taken by some Nigerians protesting and in the process attacking these companies they assumed to belong to South Africans.
Have you heard of the world Franchise? Okay, let us break down the meaning as simple as possible: Franchising is based on a marketing or business ownership style which is practiced by an organization as a strategy for business expansion. A license is sold to an investor or an entrepreneur by a reputable multinational/transnational company or a renowned brand to use the name, reputation, and brand to continue business without the brand owner having to invest cash into the franchise. Most South African companies like MTN Nigeria, Multichoice Nigeria, Shoprite e.tc we see in Nigeria today and not owned by South Africans. The names are South African, but the owners and partners within Nigeria are mostly not South Africans.
When you try to loot these companies and businesses here as an excuse to fighting back against what some of the South Africans are doing in their country, you’re cutting your nose to spite your face. You are hurting your fellow Nigerians, putting your fellow Nigerians into debts and causing loss of jobs to workers working within these companies/businesses.
Why not let the government of the land which is saddled with the responsibility of looking after Nigerians and our interest do their job and not take laws into your hands. You may likely become a franchise owner tomorrow, would you want to end up seeing your businesses suffer for the sins of others?
