5 interesting facts about our mental capability
Mental capacity is your ability to make your own decisions independently. Those lacking capacity either through a disability or illness such as mental health problem, dementia learning disability or dementia cannot do some of the following things:
comprehend information available to them on a particular decision
maintain or sustain such information enough to be able to arrive at a decision
compare and contrast information present to make the decision
And be able to communicate their decision from the information
We make decisions, great and small all the days of our lives and a majority of us are able to make these decisions independently based on our mental capability, though we may search for information, support or advice for more complex ones. For the majority of people, their mental capacity to arrive at certain decisions of their lives is affected either temporarily or permanently.
5 Interesting facts about mental capacity
(1)Do you know that according to Gottfredson, (1997) Cognitive ability is as a mental capability comprising of problem-solving, reasoning, planning, complex idea comprehension, abstract thinking and learning through experience?
(2)It is an assertion that children learn what to do in situations when they get rewarded. The inbuilt mental capability may be powerful than what we believe.
Adults and children have a belief that in a particular kind of circumstance, there are actions like ``this is what is supposed to be done''. Learning what one is expected to do and does it with little reinforcement of the specific kind of response. It’s noted that children who attempt to learn what they are expected to do in a particular situation and do it will survive better than their counterparts who need to learn responses via reinforcement.
(3) Do you know that just imagining the future is enough to propel the brain in motion? This mental ability to be ahead of the senses has a vital role in aiding with understanding speech. Our brain is continuously forecasting words, meanings, and sounds that people try to produce, according to MRC Cognition’s Matt Davis.
(4)Do you know that you have the ability to forecast the future, dissect words spoken while you dream and judge faces you see in 0.1 seconds? Through your mental capability, thoughts you have no idea of can run your life.
(5)Our mental capability can help us defeat bad habits according to Ann Graybiel and her colleagues from the Institute of Technology, Massachusetts. There is a region deep inside our brain called the striatum which is vital to for the formation of habits. When an action is initiated by us, the prefrontal cortex involves in planning high-level tasks communicates with the striatum which in turn sends messages to implement the tasks. With time, inputs’ emanating from the prefrontal circuits fades, then replaced by loops linking the striatum and the sensorimotor cortex. The loops and the memory circuits allow us to carry out the behavior without thinking about it.
So do not underestimate what your mental capability, there’s room for more performance if put into use.
