1. Chilli
Capsaicin, the active ingredient found in chillies, and it certainly has made a name for itself, it provides an intense flavour kick and also has a plethora of health benefits including boosting your metabolism. Studies suggest that by consuming a chilli rich diet you can actually raise your basal metabolic rate (the calories our body uses to maintain our body functions), this means we burn more calories just by simply increasing our bodies basic need for calories. The fun thing about chilli is it is highly versatile, you can put it in your eggs or you can put it in a healthy hot chocolate.
2. Green Tea
Green tea is an antioxidant powerhouse! There are few foods on the planet that can surpass the proven health benefits of green tea. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is the primary thermogenic compound found in green tea, this means it boosts your body's ability to burn fat. Drink 4 cups a day for maximum benefits.
3. Coffee
Boy has coffee had health professionals in a head spin. Some research suggests it's good for our health, some suggest it’s not so good, one would suggest in this case to consume in moderation. One beneficial effect of coffee is its metabolism boosting qualities, which is largely due to the caffeine found in coffee and its ability to boost epinephrine levels. One word of advice thou; always consume your coffee without the added nasties that can slow your metabolism such as sugar and cream.
4. Ginger
Ginger has traditionally been used in natural medicine for its anti-inflammatory benefits, but surprisingly ginger is actually really great at boosting your metabolism. Much of these benefits seem to come from gingers ability to increase norepinephrine and epinephrine production. We recommend using ginger in your morning porridge.
5. Water
Although not technically a food, water is certainly worth a mention. It keeps us alive but it can also actually increase our metabolism. Studies suggest that by drinking 500ml of water a day, both men and women can increase metabolic rate by up to 30%. This is an exciting finding in the world of weight loss and highlights the extreme importance of water consumption in maintaining health. 2 litres of water consumption a day is recommended.
6. Eggs
Eggs are considered a nutrient dense high protein food. High protein foods work wonders on your metabolism through their thermic effect on the body. Your body requires a lot more energy to metabolise protein which makes a high protein diet particularly beneficial for weight loss. Eating an omelette is a perfect way to start the day.
