1. Objective:
To establish a procedure of handling of analytical balance.
2. Scope:
This sop provides the method of using and maintenance of analytical balance.
3. Responsibility:
QC Officer/ QC Executive
4. Accountability:
QC In-charge/QC Manager
5. Environment, safety and Health precautions:
Ensure that the balance is placed on flat platform and free from vibrations.
Calibration status must be valid.
Never weigh chemicals directly in contact with the balance pan; use vessels, weighing paper or filter paper.
The balance plate should be neat and clean and do not press down on the pan.
6. Procedure:
1. Clean the area of balance and around the balance.
2. Turn on the power supply and press power "I/O" button.
3. Ensure that leveling bubble is in center, if it not centered, center it by turning the leveling screws on the bottom toward the back of balance.
4. Zero the by pressing “0” button and allow the balance to be zero, wait until display screen appears with all zeros. Now balance is ready for use.
5. For weighing use an appropriate weighing container/weighing paper/beaker.
6. Place the weighing container on the balance pan and close the door. Now press tare “T” button to tare the mass of container to obtained the direct mass of material that you going to weigh.
7. After taring display shows zero value now place the sample on container and avoid to spilled on balance pan or surrounding.
8. Close the door and note the reading after stearic “*” sing appears that means now it is in stable condition.
9. Transfer the material to a suitable object and again press tare “T” button to appear zero on display.
10. After using balance, clean it if any material spilled on and around the pan and clean the surrounding area of the balance.
7. Abbreviations:
Analytical balance: Analytical balances are highly sensitive lab instruments designed to accurately measure mass.
Leveling bubble: indicating button that shows the balance is accurately measure the weight of object.
