Intersectionality and its Impact on Communication
First coined by Professor Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw in 1989 academic paper, the term “Intersectionality” is a framework which properly defines the societal discriminating behavior against a person on the basis of social categorizations of cast, color, race, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, ethnicity etc. Intersectionality is being viewed as a social theory to understand the nature of complexity of discrimination and prejudice, people face due to their identities (Crenshaw 2).
Equality for all is important in any healthy society. By gaining the adequate knowledge of interaction with companions and colleagues, participating in conversations to reflect on challenging issues, and widening the mindset to accept the diversity and justice for all, can see a positive impact of intersectionality concepts on communication. In accordance to this, Kamala Harris has set a great example being one of the most prominent personality in the world. Harris has conquered the long deemed unconquerable obstacle often defined for the women of color. Stepping forward firmly ever since the completion of her law degree, Harris has developed the habit of overcoming giant obstacles in a society dominated by white men. Being a descendent of South African and Indian refugees, she become the first elected woman and person of color to be appointed as San Francisco's district attorney and later on she took on the same office for California’s attorney general (Black 20).
Kamala Harris wrote her glittering name in history as she took on the role of senator of Golden State, as the first black woman to do so and then, the ultimate achievement of her life being the first African American and South Asian women to be elected as Vice-President by a major political party. Harris’ achievement will encourage the young women to pursue leadership roles (Brah and Phoenix 55s). As Harris said in her speech, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said in her first post-election address to the nation of possibilities.” She spoke to the children of our nation in her victory speech, “Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they’ve never seen it before.”
Kamala Harris has become an epitome of pride and possibilities overcoming countless hurdles thrown at her being an African American and South Asian woman in politics. Her countless efforts and the fruitful results of those efforts will create a sense of possibility in all of America’s minority class, only then the true purpose of intersectionality studies will be achieved, to the point where justice is swift and diversity is endorsed.
