Euthanasia is the intentional termination of a person's life to save that person suffering from a painful and incurable disease that would otherwise be unavoidable if he or she had lived (Kane, 2011). Euthanasia is illegal in many countries.
In today's world, euthanasia is a contentious issue with many unanswered questions. Which would you prefer: lying in bed dying slowly and painfully or dying quickly and painlessly? Patients have this option with euthanasia, allowing them to end their pain and suffering. Living in a hospital bed in constant pain is not a life that anyone would choose, and forcing this life on someone is an immoral and terrible thing to do. People who choose euthanasia, prefer to die because they know that their lives will never be the same, nor pleasant for themselves or those close to them. Hence, death becomes a better option because you cannot fully participate in life without suffering. Friends and family are also affected by the agony of seeing someone they care is about die and suffer while knowing they can’t do anything to help. With these thoughts in mind, euthanasia is one of the most moral treatments available in today's world. On the other hand, from a religious stand point, religious leaders believe that euthanasia is unnecessary because pain and suffering are more than just a medical issue. However, the doctor is indeed obligated to fulfill the patient's request.
In most countries, euthanasia is illegal and may result in a prison sentence. In the United States, the law varies from state to state. Euthanasia has been an argumentative and emotional issue since long. Human euthanasia is legal in Colombia, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Canada as of November 2017, and assisted suicide is legal in Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and a few US states. Although there is no special legal status for euthanasia in the United Kingdom (Davis, 2022). Amongst various reasons, one of the most common reasons for euthanasia is that the person is in excruciating pain. Today, advances in the treatment of pain are constantly being made, and as they do, the case for euthanasia/assisted suicide becomes proportionally weaker. Euthanasia emphasizes cases of unendurable pain as justifications for euthanasia. Almost all pain can be cured with proper treatment, and in those cases where it cannot be eliminated, it can be significantly reduced.
Many interest groups continue to debate euthanasia, with some believing that it is the only humane way to put an end to suffering. Whereas. Some people believe that humans must suffer because it is part of God's plan. However, euthanasia remains a contentious issue due to the various points of view that may be valid.
