Infertility and Insulin Resistance Explained by a Fertility Nutritionist
Carolyn Gundell, MS, RMACT (Reproductive Medicine Associate of Connecticut) nutritionist, has explained how your fertility is affected by insulin resistance, in a very lucid way.
What is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin is responsible for providing glucose to your cells. Insulin resistance is when your body resists the normal action of insulin because of which insulin doesn't work as efficiently as it should. Consequently, the level of glucose in your body rises which results in secretion of even more insulin. High insulin levels lead to hyperinsulinemia which further can cause inflation, high blood pressure, diabetes, drastic weight gain. Lack of physical activities and too much of processed food in the diet is a vital cause for insulin resistance.
Higher levels of insulin adversely effects Ovaries
It is required that there is balance in hormone production for a woman who is getting ready for pregnancy. Insulin sensitivity and fertility are intertwined. PCOS- complex hormonal condition, is considered as the biggest cause of female infertility. Higher levels of insulin can cause poor or no ovulation due to raised androgen's adverse effect on follicle development
Insulin encourages weight gain and hampers fertility
When your body becomes resistant to insulin the overproduction can prevail for years in your body, giving rise to glucose and thus contributes to weight gain which can hamper your fertility. Insulin resistance is found more in women with obesity. A loss in weight improves the balance of insulin and ameliorate productivity by resuming the ovulation.
Insulin affects the pregnancy
Insulin resistance can lead to gestational diabeties in women. It happens to women who though don't have diabetes before but owing to high blood sugar levels face it in late pregnancy. Babies who face more exposure to greater levels of insulin pose a risk of having obesity.
Tips for optimizing health during pregnancy.
