Study Guide for Tissues
Tissue is a group of cells bearing common origin and function in coordination to perform specialized activities. Study of tissue is called histology and pathologist perform the studies.
Types of Tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
*Covers body surface
*Lines hollow organs, body cavities and ducts
*Forms glands
*Facilitates in interaction of body’s internal and external environments
*Protects and supports organs.
*Stores fat, play role in immunity, binds organs together
*Comprise special cells, which play an important role in contraction and movement of the body and internal organs.
*It also plays an important role in heat generation.
*Responds to the internal and external stimulus through action potential or nerve impulses.
*Brings muscular contraction or relaxation
*Brings secretion of hormones, enzymes and glandular secretions
Types
A. Simple epithelial-
*Simple squamous-Single layer, flattened, disc-like central nuclei, thin cytoplasm facilitates diffusion and filtration,
e.g.kidney glomeruli, lining of blood vessels, heart, lymphatic vessels, air sacs of lungs
*Simple Cuboidal- cube like, play role in secretion and absorption
e.g. kidney tubules, small glands, ducts, ovary surface
*Simple Columnar-play role in absorption and secretion, ciliated propels mucus in reproductive canal. Non-ciliated present in digestive tract
*Pseudostratified- role in secretion e.g. non-ciliated type present in sperm-carrying duct.
B. Stratified epithelial
*Stratified squamous-subjected to abrasion
Keratinized
Non-keratinized
*Stratified cuboidal
*Transitional- lines ureter and urethra
Types
A. Proper CT-protects organs
B. Fibrous CT
*Fibroblasts
*Leucocytes
Macrophages
Mast cells
*Adipose CT- reserves food
*Areolar CT
*Reticular CT
*Dense irregular fibrous
*Dense regular fibrous
C. Special CT
*Cartilage
Hyaline
Fibrocartilage
Elastic
*Bone
Compact bone
Spongy
*Blood
C. Extracellular Matrix
*Interstitial fluid
*Collagen fibers
*Elastic fibers
*Reticular fibers
Types
*Skeletal/ Striated- for voluntary movement and locomotion.
*Cardiac- contracts and propels all through the life, present in heart
*Smooth/Non-striated- propels substance in internal passage. Present in the walls of hollow organs
Neuron is the unit of nervous system.
Types of Neurons-
* Unipolar
* Bipolar
* Pseudounipolar
* Multipolar
