Project Proposal: Quadruple Aim of Healthcare
Objective
To enhance healthcare efficiency through Quadruple Aim encompassing decreasing cost, improving patient experience, population health as well as team well-being and productivity, by utilizing modified work roles and skillsof a team member as permitted under license constraints.
Background
Quadruple Aim was adopted from Triple Aim (developed by Institute for Healthcare Improvement) in 2014 in order to enhance performance of healthcare system. Triple Aim comprised enhanced patient care experience, reducing per capita cost of health care and improve better health of the population (Privis Health., 2019).
Introduction
The Quadruple Aim is akin to a compass, it guides the healthcare system in a holistic manner by providing direction to the patients and their providers, thereby aims to improve the healthcare system and taking it to the next level. The performance dimensions are applicable to crucial healthcare challenges such as preventing and managing disease leading to mortality (Arnetz et al., 2020).
Triple Aim worked remarkably in controlling the optimization of health systems, keeping this in consideration, improved clinical experience was added to make it more meaningful as Quadruple Aim (Privis Health., 2019). The components of Quadruple Aim comprise improved patient experience, better outcomes, reduced costs and enhanced clinical experience (Arnetz et al., 2020).
Literature Review
Literature reveals that IHI has a motive to improve health of population by improving the health of patients without losing focus, no escalation in the cost of treatment and by estimating what matters the most. Quadruple Aim lays emphasis on more evolution in elevation of health equity ad also promotion of joy in work. Literature further illustrates that in order to secure population health as well as progress for every individual, family and community, interventions need to aim at dealing with inequities and disparities(Feeley., 2017).
Based on the review of literature, Quadruple Aim encompasses-
* Improved Patient Experience-
The aim of QA is to enhance the quality of care received by the patients with added focus on patient and families. The chief objective is to attain high-quality, effectual care. This promotes patient’s understanding about their own condition(s) and they manage their own care for better outcomes.
* Better Outcomes-
To enhance the overall health of the population, it is imperative to improve patient experience especially in the present scenario where chronic diseases are augmenting in the society. Consequently, by refining patient experience, a reduction in prevalence or in severity of chronic disease is observed together with enhanced chronic care management.
* Reduced Costs
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services elucidate that 18% of the US GDP is spent on healthcare and is expected to mount with time. It is essential to maintain healthcare at reduced costs for sustainable development of society and also for appropriate allocation of funds and to make healthcare affordable.
* Enhanced Clinical Experience-
With the prevalence of value-based care, quality care is also essential aspect, which begins with the provider and there is high pressure on care providers, which may result in unwanted consequences and quality of care becomes compromised. Such activities lead to staff burnout which may result in decreased satisfaction, diminished health outcomes and enhanced cost. Therefore, improved clinical experience is taken into account and Triple Aim was transformed to Quadruple Aim (Freeley., 2017; Privis Health., 2019; Arnetz et al., 2020).
Method
The experimental study is to be carried out in a family practice clinic with 25 employees comprising 6 providers.
* Design
The present study will adopt the method by Arnetz et al. (2020) to improve clinic efficiency and clinic productivity, intervention, focus on revising patient flow, facilitating preplanning, optimizing skill utilization of team members and EFFECT (Efficiency focused flow intervention to energize care teams).
* Measures
*Aim 1- Decreasing cost
*Aim 2- Health of Population
*Aim 3- Well-being of health team
*Aim 4- Experience of patient
Result and Analysis
This will be carried out using student t-test.
Conclusion
Clinical efficiency could be enhanced through enhanced skill utilization through allocation of work roles to minimize stress, burnout, revenue issues as well as access limitations. By application of Quadruple Aim, productivity could be enhanced with feasibility in implementing clinical process of changes.
