10 TIPS TO HELP YOUR TRUCK TO RUN WELL INTO OLD AGE
(Simple steps to take to help extend the life of your beloved truck)
Knowledge gathered from John Norton (Ford's Global Chief Engineer of Customer Service
Engineering) is exposed on what you can do to help keep your truck running smoothly. A bit of
care and simple maintenance tips will help your truck running like its fresh and deliver results.
Never Miss an Oil Change
Change your vehicle oil with the best as stated in owner's manual to ensure you pick the right
viscosity-index for your truck. It is recommended by Ford to do this for every 7,500 miles or six
months for 2008 model year trucks and newer but for older, higher mileage trucks, always
change your oil filter when you change your oil.
Rotate Your Tires
Rotating your tires is very important when you change your oil to ensure your tires are wearing
evenly. This helps to extend their life span, ensures a smoother ride and reduces the burden on
your truck's suspension that can come from unevenly worn tires.
Keep Your Tires Balanced
Try balancing your tires to prevent vibrations on the road and increased wear on your suspension
as well as uneven wear on your tires. A balanced tire is one in which the weight is equally
distributed around the axle.
Alignment is Key
Ensure your wheels are aligned and tires inflated to avoid gas mileage, reduce pull, whack and
prevent your truck from pulling to one side or the other and the experience of poor handling on
the road.
Check Your Lights
Check if all of your interior and exterior lights are working properly because any issues with
your vehicle will show on the radar before they become bigger problems. For instance, a dim
light can indicate an electrical problem, while a burned out light can be dangerous, and ensure
also that your glove box is stocked with spare fuses.
Make Sure Fluid Levels are Up
Check out your essential fluid levels by popping the cap like the engine oil, coolant and
windshield washer fluid; to know their readings and when to refill or change them as specified in
your owner's manual.
Give Your Engine a Breath of Fresh Air
Try to swap in a fresh engine air filter every 15,000-30,000 miles or even more often if you
frequently drive on dirt roads; to remove dust, debris, and chemical contaminants. A clean air
filter can optimize your engine's efficiency, acceleration and help it last longer.
Know Your Driving Conditions
Talking to your local mechanic about the best ways to care for your truck like keeping in mind
when you're carrying heavy loads, driving off road, or making multiple short trips daily or the
way you use your truck will determine the exact type of maintenance it'll need.
Stop in for an Inspection
Bringing in an expert technician to spot potential problems will help keep you safe and your
truck running longer. Most automakers offer specified checks at dealerships like Ford's multipoint inspection ensures everything from your batteries to spark plugs to brake pads is analyzed
for issues.
