Review of the Cooper Starfire SF 340 tire
Caption: The Starfire SF-340, made by Cooper Tire.
Cooper Tire http://us.coopertire.com/ doesn’t like to admit that the Starfire SF-340 is a tire that they make because it’s an entry-level tire for the bargain-minded consumer, but it is. They make it and put the Starfire name it on. Cooper/Starfire seems to have produced a winner with this tire as far as the majority of the people buying it are concerned.
Industry insider: “It’s a good tire”
Our industry insider says it’s a good tire and that he has heard of no complaints from customers about the quality or price of the tire. “It’s Cooper’s entry-level tire, and for that reason you won’t find it on Cooper’s site and they’ll tell you Starfire is a completely different brand, but it’s their tire and it’s even made by them. He said the tire is aimed at the consumer that wants a good quality tire but can’t spend the money on a more expensive tire and it fits that niche perfectly.
Fitment and Sizing Information
The Starfire SF-340 is a direct fit for a number of vehicles. Examples of cars that it fits are the Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic, Chrysler’s PT Cruiser and Sebring, Jeep Patriot and Liberty, and the Plymouth Sunfire. Ford’s Escort and some smaller SUVs and pickups such as the Ford Ranger are also vehicles that the SF-340 will fit directly.

Talking with Cooper about the Starfire SF 340
The only information about the Starfire SF 340 that Traction News could find was on sites that sell the tire. To remedy this, we reached out to Megan James, media relations officer for Cooper Tire and asked her a few questions.
According to James, the Starfire SF 340 isn’t listed on the Cooper Tire site because it’s not a Cooper brand tire. The tire, available in both “T” and “S” speed ratings is an all-season passenger tire that’s mud and snow rated. It’s designed to fit just about anything from a late model to one of today’s compacts.
We asked James if any special construction methods or materials were used and we were told “No comment.” She did say “This modern-looking radial is designed with lateral slots in the shoulder to help ensure excellent traction throughout the life of the tire. In addition, see-through grooves help disperse water and slush to provide dependable all-season traction. The Starfire SF-340 includes computer-designed variable pitch tread to provide a quiet running tire at highway speeds, as well as a solid center rib for smooth ride and controlled handling.”
We asked James what specific type of consumer is the Starfire SF-340 meant for and she replied “The Starfire brand is dedicated to providing value at a reasonable price without sacrificing quality or performance. The brand is available for passenger, performance, light truck, crossover, and sport utility vehicles. Specifically, the Starfire SF-340 is designed for those looking for value in their tire purchase through a combination of an affordable price and dependable performance. “
Consumer reviews
The Starfire SF-340 received Uniform Tire Quality Grades of A and B for traction and heat resistance, respectively. Its 40,000 mile treadwear warranty only garners it a UTQG treadwear rating of 440. As our industry insider said, the SF-340 is a popular tire with the people that buy it. Online reviews of the tire are almost all glowing.
