MEHUL MISTRY
Graphic Designer / Illustrator / Photographer
ILLUSTRATION
A client approached me regarding an illustration that they would
like converted into a tattoo. The client was wanting a wolf based
tattoo combined with an aesthetic of water. For personal reasons
the ideology held a sentimental value for passed family members.
Downtime Entertainment approached me regarding stickers for
cars that can be used as a way to promote their brand. They said
“We are going into unidentified spaces so we need something
that associates with that.”
The idea of this sticker reflected that quote, with an astronaut
being surrounded by unidentified space.
This project was my own personal exploration.
While studying I got an interest in graphic novels. What appealed to me was
the way the drawings were portrayed, especially in a cartoon form. This was
something I have not done before, which peaked my curiosity even more.
I turned this into a poster, which I sold as prints.
I participated in an art fair that was
held through university, as a way to
raise money for charity. The idea had
to be approved by board members in
order to be able to participate in the
fair.
I enjoy line work and detail within any
piece I create.
My idea was for a screen-printed
t-shirt, which was hand printed by me.
This allowed every single piece to be
different to one another.
PHOTOGRAPHY
I was approached by the head member of Tauranga Regional
Multicultural Council Inc to do some design and photography work
for their organisation. It is a non-government funded group, which
means it relies on donations and input from the community to keep
it going.
From the tragic mass shooting at Christchurch Mosque, this event
was a fundraiser for victims and familes all affected. This was all
for a good cause and it was my pleasure that I could be part of any
sort of relief for this tragedy.
Cherry Blossom happens near the end of September. This
festival attract people from all over New Zealand, as well as
a few from overseas. Locals with antique cars, regional food
stores, clothing brands etc, all gather at this festival with pop
up stores.
These were one of the first experiences I had gotten working
for a client doing design work as well as other things they
required. Iwas fortunate that my skill set varied and was not
restricted solely to design but other aspects also.
DESIGN
I have studied Graphic Design for 5 years. In these years I have
developed my knowledge on how design is essential to every day
life. Design is not defined in a singular category but can be applied
to a list of things. I took a passion in advertising and the marketing
side of design. This includes logo, brand image, promotions, layout
design etc.
I got the chance to do an internship at Inkwell
Studios, working under Rebecca Standlant, who
is the creative director and founder. Inkwell studio
was the perfect fit for what design I wanted to do.
They specialise in advertising and brand imaging.
Part of my time there, I got to interact with clients,
get my own set of tasks, as well as assisting
Rebecca on her tasks. As my knowledge was high,
that meant we could move onto more advanced
work. This included developing a clients logo. The
requirements involved concepts and developments
to get to a final. This was converted into a
publication to showcase all my work.
Holi is a celebration in Indian culture as a festival of
colours, symbolising joy and happiness. Holi happens
every March, in which there are many festivals
held around New Zealand that cater to it. To cause
awareness for this I was approached by Bethlehem
College to create a publication that could be used
for public use. The target audience was 15+ years. It
needed to be informational and visually approachable
for people to use.
For the sake of the publication I created my own
event, in which I let public use the colours and the
tools and conducted my own celebration. This way I
produced my own photography. This was then edited
and refined in way that it would fit the overall look of
the publication.
The text involved was research done on the history
of the festival, as well as steps and tips on what to
do with the colour powders and how to create your
own designs. I felt this was a personal touch to the
publication as being Indian myself, it helped me
understand my culture and traditions more.
I was approached by the General Manager of Botswana Butchery, which is part of Good Group Hospitality to do some design work. They required
me to re-make their logo and create new sets of menu’s (dinner, lunch, dessert, snacks, breakfast). All information needed to be manually inputed
into an Indesign file.
This was an essential project for me, as I was handed a large amount of raw data that needed to be formatted and set up in grids and columns. I also
simplified their previous logo. This made it more clean and fit better with all menus. Their previous work were not aligned properly, which I corrected
and created paragraph and character styles to simplify future work.
I had to showcase all designs to the board members to get approval, which I did. They believed it had become more tidy and less congested.
I was referred from a previous client to the general manager of NZ MATES RATES.
The venture they wanted to pursue was to make coupons/vouchers for public use. The
overview of this company is to connect Kiwi’s and allow them to experience New Zealand’s
finest attractions. The reasoning behind the coupons was to advertise local companies
and allow tourists and even locals to get a discounted price to experience what New
Zealand has to offer.
The guidelines that I had to follow was to make it legible, have measurements and guides
for clippings and to have the business details all clear. They also required me to make a
template for future use. This was done through master pages and paragraph and character
styles. I then spent time teaching Matthew how to use these functions and the basics on
Indesign. I also refined their logo and made it more symmetrical and clean.
FRONT
BACK
Kavita Anand (Founder) approached me after getting referred through a previous client. Her branding for her products
were already established, but they were not up to standard. She had worked with professional designers but they all
failed to create work for her that she wanted. She was refereed to me in assurance that I would get it done.
Kavita required a fresh start. Her products are concentrated pastes that are made from natural ingredients and no
artificial colours or preservatives. The ideology behind the designs reflected the process involved in applying her
pastes and that can be used as a story behind the design.
I had to meet the industry requirements for labels on food products, which included the ingredients, nutritional
information, etc. This was a massive learning curve as I got experience this side of the industry. I performed printing
experimentations on legibility and colour tests to ensure it would last in storage conditions.
Kavita’s Kitchen NZ recently received a Bronze Medal in NZ Food Producers Awards.
The products are currently on route to enter major supermarkets in New Zealand.
