The Eight Best Car Movies
Keywords: Top Movies about Cars
Car movies are our chick flicks so which movies are the top movies about cars? My list for the all-time great car movies involves two points: iconic cars and great car chases if a movie lacks both points they’re left out. So wait no further my friends, here is my list of the top eight Car Movies ever made. Don’t make any plans this weekend, just order Netflix and enjoy.
# 8- The Great Escape
A movie about allied pilots being held as German POWs is not normally the background for a car movie. And it wouldn’t be if not for Steve McQueen leading the Nazis on a chase throughout the German countryside on a custom TT Special 650 Triumph. Every time he tries to clear that fence I get goosebumps.
# 7- Faster
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, attempting to break into darker roles, stars in Faster as an ex-con bent on revenge. The tone of Faster is bleak. As soon as he is released from prison, The Rock’s nameless “Driver” runs to where his 1971 Chevelle SS is being stored. Corruption, bodies and car chases follow.
# 6- Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
Don’t watch this for anything other than seeing beautiful classic cars being driven recklessly across your screen. My favorite, the DeTomaso Pantera.
# 5- The Fast and Furious Franchise
I can’t pick just one movie. The cars become more exotic, the chases more unbelievable and the locations more desirable. See them all, pick your favorite but see them all. This franchise is the greatest guy escape in cinema history.
# 4- Smokey and the Bandit
Who doesn’t want to be the Bandit, constantly outwitting a bumbling, cussing sheriff from Texas while blocking for bootlegged Coors beer halfway across the country? No other movie captures 1970s southern culture and the reckless lust for life and freedom like Smokey and the Bandit.
# 3- Drive
The opening scene immediately puts you on the edge of your seat. What makes it unique is the lack of soundtrack, great cinematography, suspense and Albert Brooks as a ruthless gangster all make this an ideal noir car movie that will also touch on your artsy side. Well, as artsy as a car film should ever get.
# 2- The Italian Job (1969)
The Lamborghini Miura being driven through the Alps, the E-types, the Aston, the minis. Michael Caine in his coolest role, London and Rome in the swinging 60s and a plot to steal gold from the Italian Mafia. But really, when you have such beautiful cars and a killer cast do you really care about the plot?
# 1- Bullet
The standard bearer for car chases. A beautiful 68 Mustang GT fastback vs a 68 Dodge Charger R/T Steve McQueen as a tough cop who plays by his own rules and 1960s San Francisco. The chase is what every modern car chase aspires to be. This is a bucket list movie.
