The Daily News
Keywords: Daily News, Communication
For decades our daily news, our key to communication and information, was at least 12 hours old. For decades our daily news arrived reporting on stale information. It was impossible for print news to be up to date. The process involved writing, editing, printing, distributing and delivery. The fastest these daily newspapers could provide information was next day. Some papers offered morning delivery while others delivered at night to recap anything happening during the day.
Even with the growth of radio and television, which were able to provide up to the moment information. These platforms competed for second to the importance of the newspaper. The newspaper fought off all challenges as the medium to go to for communication or daily news. The newspaper held strong even as television news programing expanded and focused on specializations such as: sports, business, politics and even weather. The newspaper held strong because its written word was perceived as the truth. Newspapers, especially national papers like the “The Times of London” and “The New York Times” were considered the standard bearers of truth and integrity. Newspapers got fat and reviled in their power.
Then along came a true disruptor. The internet. Overnight newspapers, even the standard bearers, became obsolete. They were bloated, partisan and literally behind the times. Worst of all they were not prepared to evolve. Their arrogance became an obstacle in reaching new audiences.
The internet democratized the daily news and communication. For the first time in history information-in the guise of daily news, current events and trends, was immediately available to all consumers. No one had to wait for a paper to be printed or distributed. Not only was the news instantaneously, people all of a sudden had the ability to curate their own news, to blog and express their opinions about what is happening. Every day people, not the journalist, became the power that moved news forward. This disruption rendered the journalist irrelevant. The power of their pen, their ability to craft a story expressing their particular view was gone.
As the “common man” began to realize this shift in news, communication and opinion, he started acting on it. Anyone could set up a blog or website to publish their thoughts and views on the happenings of the world. People could attract readers without a complicated structure of distribution or advertising that could influence how the news is reported.
More important than changing how the news is reported. The entire structure of our communication has changed. The ability to communicate your thoughts and opinions is what has actually revolutionized the daily news. There are enough platforms that can convey the events of the day. We no longer care only about those. We have been empowered to demanding that a voice similar to ours, that shares our views and perspectives comment on the events of the day. We also have come to expect a platform that allows us to communicate our opinions and share with likeminded people around the world.
Our entire system of communication has become globalized and has shrunk. Today, we can share news and communicate with anyone anywhere and connect with them through our shared characteristics and views of life.
In the past the dynamic was that the news was being delivered to us and we had no control over it. Now we create and communicate the news.
