Running Head: TRACE THAT GADGET 1 Students Name Teacher’s Name Course Name Date TRACE THAT GADGET 2 Trace that Gadget Globalization has completely changed the significance of physical boundaries between countries which is why people sitting in different parts of the world can communicate as if they are sitting right next to each other. Geographical locations have little meaning if the people communicating with each other are using latest technology. This activity proved to be a surprising discovery for me. It made me realize that although the world has come a long way from being only geographically connected to becoming a global village where anyone can contact any other person for the sake of business, education, social relations; the concept of globalization has not reached every nook and corner of the world. There are people who are not as connected as the rest of the world. There is unevenness in globalization because peripheral regions are still unable to get access to information and latest technology. Some places are better linked as compared to others. After mapping my PlayStation 4, I realized that there is a clear difference between the idea and conceptualization of the product. Its different parts are manufactured at multiple locations in the U.S., Japan, Germany, Canada and UK, and are then assembled at one place which is then sent to the market for sale. A network is developed between the production countries and the ones that are selling and consuming this product. This network has created interdependence among the production and consumption parties but there is still unevenness of globalization in the system as the product is not available to the manufacturers because of social status. Moreover, there is a strong link between globalization and geography. To some extent, a sense of place is lost. More and more franchises are becoming available in multiple locations all around the world. Almost every industry is trying to create a chain across the globe so as to gain TRACE THAT GADGET 3 maximum profit. This ability of the same product being available at every other region has raised concerns among the geographers who are of the view that this rapid globalization is creating a sort of monotony around the world as the sense of place is losing its meaning with every passing day and diversity of cultures and lifestyles is lost. Automobiles, food, clothing, politics, economy, social interaction, business, education and everything else are connected to each other and yet they are not connected. Globalization is violating the physical and cultural boundaries and is making up its own boundaries which are based on the access and availability of latest technology. A person may be able to interact with a retailer in another corner of the world but he may not be connected with his neighbor due to unavailability of technology for his neighbor. On the other hand, it can prove to be a very useful tool in case a disaster strikes. Technology would help in locating survivors and speed up rescue operation in the affected areas. Still, geographers are of the view that globalization has its advantages but still, it has negatively affected the geographical relations all around the world.
