Sarah Lawrence is a private, coeducational,
liberal arts college that is located Southern
Westchester County, New York.
It is known for it’s rigorous academic and
creative standards which are fostered by its
smaller classes and a very low student to
faculty ratio of 9 to 1. It is ranked among
America’s top 100 colleges by Forbes. It is also
named the higher education institution with
the best faculty in all of America by Princeton
Review 2013.
It was established in 1926 by William Van Duzer
Lawrence (real estate mogul) on his estate in
Westchester County and was named in honor of his
wife Sarah Bates Lawrence.
The college was originally intended to provide
instruction to the arts and humanities for women.
The college became a coeducational institution in 1968.
Prior to its transition, there were discussions to relocate
the school and merge it with Princeton University, but
they decided to remain independent.
Sarah Lawrence College offers a Bachelors Degree
in Liberal Arts at the undergraduate level. Instead
of traditional majors, they provide students with a
wide variety of courses in four different circular
distributions (the creative arts, history and the
social sciences, the humanities and natural science

The college also offers Master level programs in
Writing, the Art of Teaching, Child Development,
Theatre, Dance/Movement Therapy and hosts the
nations oldest graduate program in Women’s
History, and the first graduate degree program in
Human Genetics and Health Advocacy.
The college also has a few exchange
programs: Eugene Lang College Exchange
Program, Reed College and Spelman College
Exchange Program.
They also have a number of international
programs located in four countries (Italy,
Cuba, England and France).
The student body is a combination of male
(27.8%) and female (72.2%). The college lacks
ethnic diversity among students, faculty and
administrators. Political diversity is also a
weak area at the college, conservatives are a
huge majority on campus. In recent times the
campus has assigned special areas for nonpartisan political meetings and nondenominational spiritual practices.
