In the studies of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan, six out of 10 mothers of children with age range of 0-5 admitted having been criticized of their parenting skills in all aspects, from discipline to breastfeeding. “Mothers can get overwhelmed by so many conflicting views on the ‘best’ way to raise a child,” poll co-director Sarah Clark, M.P.H., said in a statement. “Unsolicited advice — especially from the people closest to her child — can be perceived as meaning she’s not doing a good job as a mother. That can be hurtful.” Clark added: “Our findings tap into the tensions moms face when parenting advice leads to more stress than reassurance and makes them feel more criticized than supported.” Even celebrities are not immune to being shamed for their parenting style. Actress Reese Witherspoon, for instance, was a hot topic recently for being “food-shamed” after feeding her toddler cinnamon buns for breakfast. Detractors likewise bashed model Coco Rocha for bottle-feeding her baby, but she quickly cleared her side on her Instagram post. “Not that this is anyone’s business – I loved breastfeeding Loni for the first 5 months of her life and then one day my milk went dry. It happens to every mom at different times. She’s been on formula for a few weeks now and seems to be doing just fine,” she posted. Clark also specified that the subject of discipline is common occurrence with opposing viewpoints and cultural differences, such as strict supervision versus giving space for a child to explore. Sixty percent of moms admitted that they received a lot of irrelevant counsel from other people; 52% believed moms get accused and not get enough credit for their children’s behavior and welfare; and 50% of the respondents said they simply avoid people who are too opinionated. “This indicates that most mothers view their child’s health care provider as a trusted source of accurate information and advice, not as a critic,” said Clark. “Child health providers can help by encouraging mothers to ask questions about any parenting uncertainties, and offer reassurance and practical advice that helps boost mothers’ confidence and reduce anxiety around choices.” She also reminded: “It’s unfortunate when a mother feels criticized to the point where she limits the amount of time she and her child will spend with a family member or friend. In a recent study, Europe was found to have bigger liquor consumption problems, as compared to other continents, which led to these health issues. The United European Gastroenterology (UEG) recently reported that in all 28 EU states, the average daily alcohol intake was ‘moderate’—between one and four drinks per day—increasing the risk of citizens to both oesophageal and colorectal cancer. Europeans consume an average of two alcoholic drinks per day, which increases their risk of having colorectal cancer by 21%, besides other digestive cancers. ‘Heavy’ drinkers, or those that consume more than four drinks a day, all the more increase their risk of gastric, liver, and pancreatic cancer. Meanwhile, no countries within the boundary of Europe were found to have ‘light’ alcohol ingestion. Excessive alcohol consumption seems to be concentrated in Europe among other countries around the globe, the research found. More than one fifth of European population beyond 15 years old heavily consumes alcohol at least once a week, which resulted in the continent deteriorating due to the high proportion of diseases and premature deaths caused by alcohol consumption. This was the result of a recent study from Aalto University researchers. “Of course, local conditions have some effect on this,” Hassam ur Rehman, a doctoral candidate at said university, told in a statement. Renewable energy calculated by the researchers from solar heating system could be used to cover 53% to 81% of annual domestic heating energy consumption depending on the technical implementation method. During the cold season, researchers calculated the amount of solar heat acquired for heating homes when there was storage of excess energy, as well as the amount of heat for practical use when energy for heating houses was acquired through solar heating and the heat accumulated was stored for future use in cold season. Based on their statement, the researchers also studied the usage of above-ground water storage tanks for a short period heat storage and borehole storage suited for seasonal storage. The product of this experiment relied on how the heat pumps, borehole storage for storing heat, and water storage tanks were used altogether. One of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emission in the European Union is the heating of buildings that could take up 40% of all energy consumption in said region. “In Finland, more than 80% of the energy consumption in households goes to heating buildings and water, and this is on the increase. Solar energy offers economically sensible solutions for the collection of energy for this purpose, and for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, especially in southern Finland where the majority of the population lives,” said Kai Sirén, also a professor at Aalto University. Siren stated that further study should continue, focusing on measurement results on a system made and applied in Finland. Price reductions have made solar energy practical as an alternative energy source in the Nordic countries. In fact, Denmark is aiming to reach 100% renewable electricity by the year 2035, the usage of solar energy in district heat production swiftly increased. “We are talking about a computational result which includes factors of uncertainty even if the initial values have been carefully selected and the simulations conducted meticulously,” Siren noted. A native of Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao, he is a lawyer by profession obtaining his Law degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law. He topped the 1990 Bar Examinations with a grade of 89.85%. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the Ateneo de Manila University. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1991 and was Commissioner of the National Youth Commission from 1995 to 1998. He was a professor of Law at the University of the East and at the FEU-La Salle JD-MBA program until his election to the Senate. Now as head of the Senate, Pimentel said that “fairness will be the guiding principle in our implementation of the program of government for change.” His legislative agenda is supportive of the President: the shift to federalism; “all-out search for peace;” “all-out war on crime, drugs and corruption;” reforms in taxation, budget system and justice system; inclusive growth; environmental protection; quality education and healthcare; and services to the poor.
