Joker 2019
Background of the Character
Arthur Fleck, lives with his sick mother named Penny Fleck in the City of Gotham. He takes
pride in the fact that he is indeed a good person as well as his mother validates him as one
and that his purpose in life is to put a smile on people’s faces in the cold, harsh world we live
in. He has a job as a clown to entertain the children and his dream is becoming a stand-up
comedian. Arthur grows up to please other people; or someone whose life revolves around
serving others and make people happy, particularly his mother, while disregarding his own
needs.
Character’s Personality
• Pseudobulbar affect – a rare condition consisting of uncontrollable laugher or crying, and
possibly a psychotic illness, evidenced by his apparent hallucinations about the subject of
his affections
• Psychopathy - he feels no empathy for the victims of his violence
• Narcissism - crave attention and adulation by any means necessary
Character Analysis
Arthur's clown face symbolizes the persona; the false self that we show the environment,
while the uncontrollable laughs can be considered the manifestations of an utterly densed
shadow, that Arthur is unaware of. After all, he sees himself as a good person.
HE WASN'T AWARE OF IT IN THE FIRST PLACE, THE MONSTER INSIDE HIM WAS
ABLE TO GROW BEYOND HIS CONTROL WHEN IT COMES OUT AS THE JOKER.
Tho he has an awareness to his self (in transition): "through my whole life, I didn't know if I
even really existed"

Joe of YOU
Background of the Character
Joe Goldberg, a former bookstore manager at Mooney's who stalks and dates Beck in the
first season. In the second season, he goes by the name Will Bettelheim and dates Love and
works as a bookstore clerk at Anavrin. He falls in love with random women, narrates his own
thoughts as he stalks them and isolates them from their friends, and literally builds a glass
box to contain his victims, who he sometimes kills.
Character’s Personality
• Antisocial personality disorder - manipulating others to get what they want or violating
another's privacy
• Narcissistic personality disorder - have an inflated sense of self-importance and lack of
empathy for others, which are typically mechanisms used to mask their low self-esteem,
according to the Mayo Clinic
In some ways, Goldberg embodies both conditions because he's constantly violent
when he believes a person has wronged him, a common justification people with both
illnesses make for their behavior.
For example, in season 1 of "You," Goldberg hit a man named Benji, his love interest
Beck's boyfriend, over the head with a mallet, locked him in a glass box, and killed Benji a
few days later. Later in the season, Goldberg also killed Beck's best friend Peach
because he didn't like how Beck and Peach's relationship interfered with his and Beck's
relationship.

Riley of Inside Out
Background of the Character
a major character in the 2015 Disney/Pixar animated film, Inside Out. She is an 11 (later 12)
year old girl in 6th grade who loves ice hockey. She was uprooted from her happy and
simple life in Minnesota and taken to San Francisco, California, where she experiences
various changes in her life. Her emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger) help her
through this tough time, ensuring her well-being.
Character’s Personality
• Borderline Personality Disorder – the sudden change of Riley’s emotions;
• Schizotypal Personality Disorder – difficulty in making close relationships
• Antisocial Personality Disorder - behave aggressively and get into fights easily; put
yourself in dangerous or risky situations, often without considering the consequences for
yourself or for other people
• Paranoid Personality Disorder - watch others closely, looking for signs of betrayal or
hostility
Analysis of the Character
Riley was helped by her emotions namely Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust during her
tough times as well as her well-being. The conflict in her personality was caused by the
absence of some of her emotions in facing her daily obstacles. Because of this, the absence
of Joy and Sadness made the other emotions relevant. The character has shown that each
emotions has importance to the person itself unblocking the appearance of one’s emotion
that is linked to cognitive development.
Steps the Character could take to improve him/himself (thereby possibly changing the
story itself)
• Remove the characters representing Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear and Sadness. In this way,
there will be no emotional conflicts toward Riley because the absence of one would be equal
to the superiority of the others-in which would produce emotional conflicts.
• Riley should have her own way of controlling her feelings/emotions
