Top Unnecessary Things on a Résumé
For starters, let’s talk about why a great résumé is all-important.
When going to a battle that is a job interview, your résumé is your sword and shield as it is the very
first thing that a hiring manager is going to see. It can possibly help you land a job, and so it needs to
showcase your skills and highlight your achievements.
For many recruiters, a 2-page résumé is about the right length. If it goes beyond that, it better
contain important details about you. Most talent acquisition managers ignore résumés that looks
too busy.
The question now here is, how do you keep your résumé brief yet foolproof and has solid
information about you? Here’s a list of the unnecessary things you may want to take off your
résumés and land the job of your dreams.

Photos – Some hiring managers consider applicants with résumé unprofessional and that’s
the least thing we want to happen.
Objective – We don’t need to state the obvious, an applicant’s objective is get the job.
Instead of using an objective statement use a professional summary indicating why you are
the right fit for the job.
Unprofessional email address – If you don’t have one yet, create a new one. You can use
your name to make it appear more professional.
Hobbies – Unless your employer requires it, you don’t need to include these on your
résumé.
Mailing address – The only contact information you should include are your phone number
and email address.
Irrelevant work experiences – You can share these information when the hiring manager
asks.
Lengthy paragraphs –Break up any lengthy paragraphs. Remember that long is boring.
Obvious skills – Knowledge with Microsoft Office may be a little too obvious.
Reason for leaving previous work – This gives a hiring manager an impression that this may
happen with them too. Share when asked, but this isn’t necessary on your résumé.
Past Salary Information
High School information – Most hiring managers are more interested on your college course.
False Information – Some hiring managers do background check so only include what is
accurate.
Now that you know what to include or not on your résumé, also take note that it must have a
professional look. Use basic fonts and colors. It must not have typographical errors and incorrect
grammar. Scan your résumé over and over again before submitting it to potential employers. When
you are confident that your résumé is already foolproof, keep it in a portfolio.
Good luck on your job hunt!
How to Ace a Phone Interview in 4 ways
You finally received THAT phone call, thanks to your professional and impressive résumé. It is
understandable to get anxious, but don’t let that show through in your tone. Here are some tips on
how to nail that phone interview for your dream job.
1. Prepare. Just like with any other interview, preparing goes without saying. No matter how
ready you are, when you see that number on the screen of your phone, you tend to forget
everything.
More often than not, phone interviews are scheduled and announced. Thirty minutes prior
your interview, go to a place where there are no dogs barking, kids playing around, cars
honking, or curious people who may give you looks while you are on the phone trying to
impress your hiring manager. Bring with you a copy of your résumé, the job details, and the
notes you made about your potential employer.
In case you really need to take a call outside your house, you can do it inside your car but
definitely not while you’re driving. Never answer the phone while you’re in the middle of
something.
2. Observe proper phone etiquette. These days, more and more people no longer practice
this, but hiring managers still recognize proper phone etiquette leading to a higher chance of
getting hired.
If you’re anticipating calls from potential employers and you cannot answer a phone call for
whatever reason, you may want to change your voicemail recorded in a casual manner into
a more professional tone.
ꭗ Heya! Anne here. Can’t take your call right, so yeah, leave me a message.
Hi. You've reached the voicemail of John Smith. I'm not available to answer the
phone right now. Please leave your name and phone number and I'll get back to you
as soon as possible. Thanks.
But if you do are available to take that call, remember to be professional with your greeting
and closing phrases. Below are some suggested spiels.
ꭗ
Hello.
ꭗ Okay, bye.
Hello, this is Anne.
Thank you for your time today, Mr. Hiring Manager. I look forward to your email in
the next days. Enjoy your weekend!
3. Do not hesitate to ask questions. Hiring managers can get busy at times, and may already
be thinking about the next interview while you’re still have them on the phone. They may
not even remember to ask you if you have questions about the company or the job
description. You can remind them by politely asking, “That sounds great! I do have a couple
of questions before we end this conversation. Do you have a moment?”
4. Follow up. Doing a follow up via email gives you the chance to correct answers you were not
confident with and attach or include things you may have forgotten during the phone
interview. Doing so also gives you the chance to thank the hiring manager and shows your
interest with the job.

The most important thing to remember though is to take a deep breath, and think how you really
want or need that job.
